  2. Key Figures • Hariet Tubman • Born into slavery • Known as Moses in the Railroad • Always successful (19/19) • Very helpful even if she couldn’t take you as a “passenger”

  3. Levi Coffin • Known as president of the Underground Railroad • Both he and his wife used their location to help slaves into the North • His home was renamed “Grand Central Station”

  4. Experiences • Sleep deprivation • Malnourishment • High chance of being caught • Many nervous breakdowns • Mental and physical problems when they reached Canada.

  5. The Topic of Slavery • Major problem back in the 1800s • Diversity of opinions • The general though throughout the states was belief in slavery based on economic reasons • Responsibility fell of the officials • Freed slaves were denied courtesies

  6. Escaping the Underground Railroad • It was very hard to escape • Only about 1,000 slaves escaped • This was a result of the low number of people that think that slavery should be abolished • The Underground railroad was a generally dangerous adventure for everyone involved

  7. Underground Railroad Terms • It was not a literal railroad • Consisted of meeting points • Individuals organized small groups which helped maintain the secrecy • Churches played a major role • Without churches, the railroad would’ve been stopped

  8. KEY FACTS • Hariet Tubman and Levi Coffin were key figures in the UR • The experiences were harsh. One would face sleep deprivation and starvation • The topic of slavery was a heated discussion throughout the country • Few escaped the railroad since a low number of people believed in abolishing slavery • The UR was not literally a railroad, rather it used railroad terminology. It consisted of small groups of people. Without churches, the railroad would not have been that successful.
