  4. What’s the difference? The focus of GPS math is for students to have a deeper understanding of math concepts and be able to apply newly learned knowledge to real world situations. Emphasis is on problem-solving, reasoning, representation, connections, and communication.

A New Problem Abigail's cell phone company determines the price she is charged each month by using the expression 59.99 + 0.45n when n represents the number of day-time minutes over her plan allotment.  If her plan allotment is 450 day-time minutes per month, use the expression to determine what the cell phone company charged her if she talked 734 day-time minutes last month?

Subtract Multiply Add 734 284 127.80 -450 x .45 + 59.99 284 1420 $187.79 + 1136 127.80

Explain. • I came up with $187.79. • If I go back and subtract 59.99 from 187.79, I get 127.80. • If I divide 127.80 by .45, I get 284. • If I add 284 to 450, I get 734.
