  5. The Graying of America • Life expectancy • 80 year old white male is now expected to live another 8 years • 90 year old white male is expected to live another 4 years

  6. Decline in Edentulism • Decrease in edentulism • 1985-86 41% had no natural teeth • 2004 21% had no natural teeth

  7. People are Living Longer with Teeth • But having teeth doesn’t always mean healthy teeth …

  9. OH Surveillance & Older Adults • Many states have voiced an interest in monitoring oral disease among older adults • How do we monitor oral health in older adults? • BRFSS • Number of teeth • Dental visit • Teeth cleaning • Other non-clinical surveys? • Clinical surveys?

  10. Sampling IssuesWhere do we find seniors?

  11. Sampling Issues • Almost impossible to obtain a statewide representative sample of older adults • May need to opt for convenience sample • What population group? • The oldest old? • Institutionalized adults? • At risk adults?

  13. Other Surveillance Issues • What oral health indicators are most important for older adults? • How do you measure periodontitis without an invasive procedure? • Are clinical surveys necessary or can we collect questionnaire data only?
