  1. Dangling Modifiers

  2. In plain English. . . • What is a dangling modifier? • Modifiers are words or phrases that describe or change a part of a sentence. • Modifiers dangle when it’s not clear what they describe. Example: Barking like a burglar was breaking in, I checked on the dog. (Who was “barking”? The person or the dog?)

  3. Other examples • Coming in for a landing, the tower radioed the plane. • Broken in many pieces, I saw my watch lying on the floor. • Jogging down the sidewalk, the dog followed me.

  4. Preventing Dangling Modifiers • Modifiers usually need to be near the noun (or idea) they are meant to describe or modify. • Example: • Upset with the boys’ constant bickering, the car veered into a ditch as the father turned to scold the children. • CORRECT: Upset by the boys’ constant bickering, the father turned to scold the children as the car veered into a ditch. (the FATHER was upset by bickering; not the car).

  5. Your turn • While you are typing your draft, you will be going to different stations. • Group 1: Green station • Group 2: Pink station • Will need a note taking sheet! • Follow the directions and ask questions if you are confused!
