  1. Strategic Workshops and Roadmapping Patricia Ho-Hune (ERCIM) Thierry Priol (INRIA) Wifi Login: amfitheat Password: incident

  2. Goals • Foster collaboration in Grid research and technologies by defining short-, mid-, and long-term vision in the field • Establish a common Grid Collaboration Roadmap, relying on European and Chinese experts, both from academia and industry; • Consolidate this vision and promote cross-fertilisation between Grid-related projects and initiatives in Europe and China by interacting with the GRID research and industrial communities; • Exchange experiences and best practices by selecting Grid Open Standards for Grid middleware and applications interoperability and by promoting the identification of guidelines for building a Standard Quality Assurance Process; • Support lasting cooperation and establish tangible partnerships in the field through support activities and tools, ranging from a mobility programme for researchers, to a dedicated partner search engine. European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007

  3. Activities • Collaboration Roadmap endorsed at international level • EU & China research and industrial agendas • Proposal for a strategic cooperation (Grid and service software) • Series of strategic Workshops • Majors players in EU & China • Restricted audience • Conferences • Attract players & disseminate results • Initiate cooperation • Cross geographic Grid Plugtest event • Interoperability mechanisms of middleware • Grid infrastructure in EU & China • Portal and search engine • Publish and disseminate Grid results • Partners search engine (Ideal-IST) • Mobility programme • Fellowship programme • Research exchange programme European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007

  4. Outcomes • 3, 5 and 10 years roadmaps developing a shared European and Chinese vision of future GRID research perspectives for both research and industrial communities on which both sides may collaborate; • a series of conferences and workshops open to both European & Chinese participants from research, industry, government, SMEs and user communities; • a EU-China Interoperability Grid Plugtests to test and improve interoperability mechanisms of Grid middleware; • a collaborative Multilingual Portal for grid-related resources European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007

  5. WP2 - Think tank & formalisation of the Grid vision • Task 2.1: Series of strategic Workshops - Leader: ERCIM Office • Definition and validation of the Strategic Workshops agenda in collaboration with the Steering Committee (SC) and other Grid international projects • Organisation in co-operation with the Chinese partners of the workshop (meeting room, working material, accommodation…) • The workshop participants will be asked to analyse the presented findings for scientific and technological validity, industrial and societal impact, and levels of payoff compared to potential risks • Invitation of the European and Chinese Grid project representatives and of other Asian countries delegations • Registration of participants (using on-line registration interface) • Ensure local visibility (press conference, papers) and local political participation to the workshop • Collection of workshop presentations for upload on dedicated web pages • Task 2.2: Roadmap consolidation - Leader: ERCIM-INRIA • Cooperation with WP1 to extract main recommendations for future research directions from the workshop reports • Interact with WP1 to adjust original research orientation based on the feedback received from the workshop recommendations • Preparation of final ECHOGRID research roadmap European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007

  6. WP2 • Task 2.3: Roadmap finalisation - Leader: ATOS • Disseminate the draft and consolidated versions of the roadmap to targeted Grid community. • Gather complementary feedback from the community of experts to make sure the roadmap is consistent and describes a shared vision. A public period for comments will be established. • Provide recommendations for a potential alignment between the EU and Chinese strategic plans for Grid research and technology. • Enable discussion and cross-analysis with Nessi-Grid, Challengers and other similar Grid EU and Chinese initiatives. • WP2 Deliverables • D2.1 - Workshops Conclusions (proceedings) • D2.2 - Draft roadmap • D2.3 - Final consolidated roadmap • D2.4 - Roadmap validation • WP2 Milestones • Organisation of the Strategic Workshops • Roadmap finalisation European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007

  7. Draft version of the Roadmap (D2.2) • A set of topics identified at the beginning of the project: • New Programming Paradigms • Grid Architectures • Grid Management • Virtual Organization • Component Model • Workflow / Business models • Structure of the deliverable: • For each topic: • VISION • STATE OF THE ART • NEW IDEAS & LIMITATIONS • HOW IT IS COVERED IN EXISTING EC AND CHINESE WORK PROGRAMME • RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EC AND CHINA European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007

  8. Workshop 3 • Take feedback from the reviewers and implement their recommendations into the final version of the roadmap • Workshop 3 (M18) will serve to finalize the roadmap before submitting it for discussion and endorsement to European and Chinese research and industry communities. • The roadmap will be published and publicly presented as part of Conference 2 (M23). This large dissemination event will bring together representatives from national, EC-funded and Chinese Grid projects and initiatives that will serve as the closing event of the EchoGRID SSA. European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007

  9. Deliverables to be produced • D2.1 Workshops Conclusions (proceedings) - M19 (July) • D2.3 Final consolidated roadmap - M20 (August) • D2.4 Roadmap endorsement – M24 (December) European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007

  10. Feedback from the 1st reviewGeneral recommendations • The following recommendations were issued to: • 1. Improve the effectiveness of the roadmaps in their consolidated versions. EC and China visions are expected to match to the roadmaps (even with different strategies and/or qualitative aspects) • 2. The workshops should be made more effective in fostering visions, state of programmes, strategies and effectiveness of collaborations (EU and China) with respect to vertical discussions on technologies, paradigms and tools. European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007

  11. Feedback from the 1st reviewSpecific comments on WP2 • The stated roadmaps should be made explicit with respect to technologies, standards, tools, platforms, etc. This should improve the effectiveness of the roadmaps in their consolidated versions. EC and China visions are therefore expected to match to the roadmaps (even with different strategies and/or qualitative aspects). The stated visions (e.g. the emphasis on new programming paradigms) shall refer to the entire “landscape” of GRIDs – helping the reader to evaluate the effectiveness in a reference term. Roadmap intent shall be aligned with the presented “structure” (see slides at session “Think-thank” made at the review, page 9). • The workshops should be made more effective in fostering visions, state of programmes, strategies and effectiveness of collaborations (EU and China) with respect to vertical discussions on technologies, paradigms and tools. Appropriate forward looking actions to stimulate feedbacks and post-workshop activities are also suggested European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007

  12. Feedback from the 1st reviewSpecific comments for WP2 • The roadmap will be a key deliverable and a key output of the project to be shared with the community at large. The roadmap should consolidate the EchoGrid vision for the cooperation on research, industrial and standardization aspects and should incorporate the time dimension: what should be implemented in the short, medium and long terms. • The workshop in June shall involve more industrial participants and discussions / sessions to improve these aspects of the project. • There should be an updated version of the roadmap available in June and taking into account the comments above, so that it can be used as a starting point for the discussions in the workshop. European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007

  13. Feedback from the 1st reviewSpecific comments on D2.2 • D2.2 It is unclear on whether whole project Road Map being fully shared and endorsed by Chinese partners. Difficulties are emerging in immediately differentiating decisions made by the consortium in terms of directions of actions taken by EU and actions taken by CH. From so large amount of information, recommendations, find a way to highlight the actions taken (e.g. using colours for text highlighting or similar), as financed by current project funds. The elaboration should more declarative with respect to too many : “could”, “should”, • “Recommendations” that are found in the text. There is a need of a Road Map with – project management principles & tools such as milestones with actions, risks, deliverables, project reviews, etc., project completion performance measurements and quality system applied. • Deliverable D2.2 is approved subject to the availability of an improved version for the workshop taking into account the comments above. • Deliverable D2.1a and D2.1b are approved. It will be important to make a follow up of the workshops to get feedback from the participants and to understand their impact. European and Chinese Cooperation on Grid Beijing – 7 to 9 February 2007
