    1. HSPE High School Proficiency Exam Writing Unit

    2. HSPE? WTF? Sophomores take the HSPE test in March & April We have HSPE testing in the morning, and then regular classes meet on a modified schedule starting around 11am The test covers four subjects: Reading Writing (2 days) Math Science Passing the HSPE is a graduation requirement

    3. Reading Informational Materials: articles, maps, charts, graphs, and informational text Literary Materials: short stories, essays, and poems Types of responses: Multiple choice Short answer (a few sentences) Expanded answer (paragraphs)

    4. Writing Two different types of writing are scored: Writing to explain (expository) Writing to persuade (persuasive) You will have time to write a rough draft and a final draft for each of the two required essays

    5. HSPE Writing Modes Expository Writing Describe something you’ve experienced How to do something Describe what something is EXPLAIN! Persuasive Writing State an opinion about a topic Urge the reader to believe your opinion PERSUADE!

    6. Scoring Criteria for Essays Content Strong ideas Style Write so the reader gets a sense of who you are Follow writing conventions (spelling, grammar, complete sentences, punctuation, capitalization, etc.) Organization Writing follows a logical order Examples (CD) are followed up with explanation (CM)

    7. Two-week HSPE Writing Unit For the next two weeks in English class, we will be doing a HSPE Writing Unit At the end of the unit, you should be able to: Write effective expository and persuasive essays Pass the HSPE with flying colors!

    8. In-Class Essay #1 Expository Writing Choose an activity that you have tried and then write a five-paragraph essay for your teacher explaining what you learned from doing that activity.

    9. In-Class Essay #1 Day 1 (today): Intro to HSPE Expository prompt Prewriting (graphic organizer) Example essays

    10. In-Class Essay #1 Day 2 (Thursday) Example essays (depending on time) Write rough draft

    11. In-Class Essay #1 Day 3 (Friday) Write final draft Turn in final draft Staple together: Final draft Rough draft Prewriting (graphic organizer)

    12. In-Class Essay #2 Persuasive Writing Persuade the school board to believe your opinion about whether or not 4-years of PE should be required in high school Day 1: Prewriting/Examples Day 2: Rough Draft Day 3: Complete & turn in Final Draft

    13. In-Class Essay #3 Expository Writing Identify a person you would like to see again and explain your reasons why Day 1: Prewriting/Examples Day 2: Rough Draft Day 3: Complete and turn in Final Draft

    14. How will my essays be scored? All 3 essays must be turned in to receive a score for this unit You will choose ONE essay to type This ONE essay will earn a letter grade that will count for the entire unit
