  3. There could be 3 kinds of revolutionary. Let’s define them. (L3): fill in the gaps using the correct phrase in red. • change • get rid of • challenges • Someone who ______________ those in power to do some things differently • Someone who wants to _________ those in power in order to bring in a whole new way of living • Someone who wants to ______________ those in power but doesn’t have any better ideas of his own. **BrainGym**What kind of revolutionary do you think Jesus might turn out to be ? Why ?

  4. Jesus challenged the religious leaders in Israel to CHANGE the way they worshipped God: instead of following the rules slavishly, Jesus taught that God would be better pleased if they did things from the heart, out of love…. The Rule says work is forbidden on the Sabbath. But if someone is sick and needs help, what would you do? The Rule says you must wash before eating. But if your heart is full of evil, what should you do ? The Rule says you must punish people who have committed adultery by stoning them. But if you yourself are also a sinner, what should you do ? How would you challenge these Rules? What would you do ?...

  5. How did Jesus challenge the religious leaders? Draw a picture for each situation, and speech bubble the answers to the questions. • Matthew 23:23-28 Pharisees Washing before Eating • What does Jesus challenge them about ? • What does Jesus say they should do? • John 8:3-11 The Woman Caught in Adultery (adultery = cheating on her husband) • Why was she being stoned ? • What does Jesus say to them that challenges them to stop stoning her ? • What does Jesus say to the woman? • Mark 3:1-6 Healing on the Sabbath • What were the people in the synagogue waiting to catch Jesus doing ? why? 2. What did Jesus do and how did he reply? 3. What did Jesus’ reply mean ? Is it more pleasing to God to do good or to do evil on the Sabbath? To follow the Rule and do nothing, or to heal? Let’s see if we can catch him doing work healing someone on the Sabbath ***Which of Jesus’ replies do you think would be most challenging to the religious leaders? Explain why.

  6. Pharisees “be clean” inside The woman caught in adultery The man with the withered hand 1 2 3 • Which 2 accounts show Jesus’ compassion ? • Which account is a challenge against the Sabbath rules ? • Which account is a challenge not to judge others ? • Which account shows love is better than following rules?
