  2. Introducing: UVI Libraries • CVI chartered in 1962 ; became UVI/HBCU in 1986 • Two libraries; two campuses; two islands • Merged with IT Department in 2005

  3. Libraries’ Learning Technologies “CLICKERS” • Student response devices • Introduced to UVI library/faculty in early 2009 • Used in freshman information literacy sessions from Spring 2010 • Increased attentiveness • Immediate assessment

  4. Libraries’ Learning Technologies BLACKBOARD • Course management system (CMS) • Utilized by ~70% of faculty • Prior to Spring 2009, library presence = tabbed link

Information Literacy on BlackBoard • Information literacy “course” launched in March 2009 • Resource center evolved to supplement ‘one-shots’ • Blackboard selected for ease of use • Organized by functional use: • Definition of Information Literacy • Instructor/Staff Profiles • Virtual Tour • Glossary • Library Lifesavers • Subject Guides

  12. Implications • Why the disparities? • Extremely high interest in “What is Info Lit?” • Surprisingly low interest in other areas • Meeting/anticipating users’ needs • Expanding course promotion at points of need • More UVI library-specific material to be added

  13. Summary • Both efforts met goal of augmenting one-shot sessions • Content and service delivery must be focused • Library has potential to lead campus in learning technologies

Promoting Library support for curricula through the CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AND LEARNING (CETL) • Bridge built through collaboration between academic affairs and Information & Technology Services (ITS) • Librarians’ role in collection development, & information literacy, blending with instructional design • Integrated Library & Academic Technology committee

In the beginning, there was a PLAN • The ITS 5-Year Plan for Curriculum and Technology Support - the foundation to develop the CETL & the avenue for Library involvement • The PLAN supports Strategic Planning 2012 initiatives: • Strategic Goal #1 To create a technology support system for faculty and students to enhance teaching and learning outcomes - Strategic Goal #2 To establish a training and professional development program

As the PLAN unfolds • Use of Portal and Blackboard for IL asynchronous training • Building librarian skills to contribute to curriculum development and delivery • Streamline library collection development through CETL • Librarians responsible for Freshman Development Seminar courses • Clearinghouse for faculty scholarly contributions • Using Internet2 to supplement library resources
