  1. Visualization of Transient Wave Behavior Jeffrey Carroll Sophomore, Computer Engineering Dr. Robert W. Scharstein

  2. System Used • PC using MATLAB • MATLAB will be used to approximate wave forms • Animations in MATLAB will be used to visualize wave behavior

  3. Input/Output • Input physical parameters of boundaries and initial point • Output Animations of wave forms in 3 dimensions

  4. What am I modeling? • First, the vibrations along a string • This is only 2 dimensions • The end result will be the wave forms along a fixed-boundary circle • For instance, a drum head – 3 dimensions • Each will be stimulated at an infinitely small point

  5. The movements of waves along a timpani head can be modeled using my final product

  6. Functional Modular Design 2/19 One-Dimensional Fourier Series 3/13 Fourier Series solution of vibrating string Border Value Problem, with animation 3/27 Solution of rectangular membrane Border Value Problem with animation 4/17 Solution of circular membrane Border Value Problem with animation - must show understanding of Bessel functions

  7. Any Questions?
