  1. The Mid Powys MindHealth & Wellbeing Project Presentation by: April Cullen & Damien Archer

  2. Introduction • This project has been funded by the Big Lottery Fund for two years. • Its aim is to take the Mid Powys Mind service into the communities of Radnorshire and North Brecknock • Furthermore, there will be a strong emphasis upon the theme of health and wellbeing to support those who may not be living as healthily as they could be.

  3. Why has the project started? • Fuel and transport prices have increased making it difficult to travel and restricting access to services, activities and events thereby damaging social networks. • High levels of unemployment have led to less jobs, less money and fewer opportunities to apply for credit • Food prices are higher and this is forcing people to eat much poorer diets. • All of these factors are leading to a greater risk of people developing mental distress.

  4. What can we do? • To continue to support those with poor mental health • To reach out and guide community members to the support they need • To build awareness of the importance of health and wellbeing • Provide courses, activities and events to allow people to gain the skills and knowledge to take better care of themselves. • Help people to overcome and cope more effectively with the effects of the recession (become more resilient, confident and have more self esteem)

  5. Healthy Minds • Relaxation and other similar therapies to help deal with stressful situations and relieve anxiety Good Health & Wellbeing = Healthy Finances • Financial management and budgeting • Volunteer training • Access to ICT • CV writing and career guidance Healthy Hearts • Healthy eating and cookery • Low impact exercise

Targets • After 2 years, 75 people will have identified (through their personal development plans) that they have improved their physical health and wellbeing. • At the end of the second year, 200 people will have received training to improve and develop their lifestyles. • At the end of 2 years, 50 people with poor mental health will have improved their social networks. • At the end of 2 years, we will have worked with 10 organisations to run joint activities / events for people with poor mental health.

  11. What exactly is wellbeing? "The subjective state of being healthy, happy, contented, comfortable and satisfied with one's quality of life. It includes physical, material, social, emotional ('happiness'), and development and activity dimensions.” DOH, Commissioning Framework for health and wellbeing, 2007 p 99

  12. The 5 Ways to Wellbeing Connect With the people around you. With family, friends, colleagues and neighbours, at home, work, school or in your local community. Building these connections will support and enrich you every day. Be Active Go for a walk or run. Step outside, cycle, play a game, garden, dance. Exercising makes you feel good. Most importantly, discover a physical activity you enjoy and that suits your level of mobility and fitness. Take Notice Be curious, catch sight of the beautiful, remark on the unusual, notice the changing seasons. Savour the moment, whether you are walking to work, eating lunch or talking to friends. Be aware of the world around you and what you are feeling. Reflecting on your experiences will help you appreciate what matters to you.

  13. The 5 Ways to Wellbeing Keep Learning Try something new, rediscover an old interest, sign up for that course, take on a different responsibility at work, fix a bike, learn to play an instrument or how to cook your favourite food. Set a challenge you will enjoy achieving. Learning new things will make you more confident as well as being fun. Give Do something nice for a friend, or a stranger, thank someone, smile, volunteer your time, join a community group, look out, as well as in. Seeing yourself, and your happiness, linked to the wider community can be incredibly rewarding and creates connections with the people around you.

  14. The 5 Worst Foods For Your Health Fizzy Drinks An average tin of cola can have between 8 and 16 teaspoons of sugar in it, a lot of caffeine as well as artificial flavourings, preservatives and colourings. They can contribute to weight gain, tooth decay and diabetes to name but a few. Processed Meats Processed meats like sausages and hot dogs are full of salt and saturated fat. Some brands of hotdogs are even produced from all sorts of different animals and include a number of preservatives and artificial colourings. Beef Burgers A fast food burger can contain a shocking amount of calories, salt, sugar and saturated fat. Plus, a single burger may contain meat from dozens of animals. When buying burgers from the supermarket just watch how much fat will pour out when cooking!

  15. The 5 Worst Foods For Your Health Fancy Ice Cream 1 serving can provide as much as 50% of your recommended fat for the day as well as 40% of your total recommended carbohydrate intake. Also high in sugar and trans-fats which are unnatural and elevate cholesterol levels and can clog arteries. Chips This also depends on the type of fat they are cooked in, but one fast food restaurant still uses a salty coating that allows more fat to be absorbed.
