  7. ABIOTIC • Non –Living Resources or Components of an Ecosystem • Examples: Water, light, temperature, air, soil, rocks and wind

  8. LIMITING FACTOR • Those biotic and abiotic factors that limit the size of a population

  9. COMPETITION • All living things compete for • Food • Space • Competition limits population growth

  10. CARRYING CAPACITY • The total number of organisms supported in a habitat

  11. September 18, 2013 Pre-AP • In your journal, write a short summary of how food, water and land (shelter) are important components of a habitat. Glue in the graph information. • You will be assigned a number for a short game we will play. • You will graph the data from the game.

  12. September 18, 2013 • On your desk is a ½ piece of paper with some of the factors that were presented in the game played yesterday. • Decide if the factor limited population growth or allowed population growth. (Did you have to go backward or forward?) • Then decide if the factor was biotic or abiotic. • Check the correct boxes.

  13. Limiting FactorYEAST LAB • 10 cc Yeast • 10 cc Sugar • 50 mL Water at 40-50 degrees C • Spoon • Cup • Paper Towel

  14. Procedure • One person will get supplies • Set down paper towel on your desk. Place the yellow cup on top. • Observe the sugar, then pour into the cup. • Observe the yeast, then pour into cup. 15. YEAST • Single Celled • Eukaryotic • Fungi • Used to expand in cooking

  16. ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION • Parent Cell • Budding • Identical / Uniform Offspring • No Survival Advantage

  17. ABIOTIC FACTORS • Temperature • Space

  18. POST LAB QUESTIONS – answer on handout • 1. What kind of change occurred when mixing the sugar and yeast? • 2. What abiotic factors affected the yeast? • 3. What kind of change occurred after adding water? • 4. Will the yeast continue to reproduce forever? Why or Why Not? • 5. What is an example where two different species might compete for resources? • 6. What did you learn about how yeast depends on and may compete for abiotic resources?
