  1. CVFD Training – Salvage & Overhaul SFFMA Training Objectives: 5-01.01,.02,.03,.04,.05,.09

  2. Introduction • Salvage and overhaul are not viewed as critical tasks. • New firefighters will not be involved in fire cause determination, but should understand key principles. • This lesson explains the concepts and importance of salvage, overhaul, and fire cause determination.

  3. Salvage Tools and Equipment • All fires involve a potential loss of material goods. • Firefighters can have a tremendous impact with aggressive salvaging. • Little things will go a long way. • The basic premise is to remove harmful atmosphere and minimize damage.

  4. Good Salvage Operation

  5. Stopping Water Flow from Sprinkler Heads • This is the main step in salvage operations. • Sprinkler wedge is the most common tool. • Use full PPE, especially eye protection. • Other mechanical devices are available.

  6. Salvage Covers

  7. Visqueen

  8. Floor Runners

  9. Water Vacuum

  10. Miscellaneous Salvage Tools

  11. Maintenance of Tools and Equipment Used in Salvage • Inspect tools and equipment after use. • Salvage tools are often exposed to hazardous materials. • Brush off, wash, dry, and inspect salvage covers.

  12. Salvage Covers Folds and Rolls

  13. Salvage Operations • Goal is to eliminate possible damage. • Salvage team must be aware of surroundings. • Ceiling collapse is one of the biggest hazards. • Leaks, sprinkler heads, and unmonitored water flow can all lead to collapse. • If signs are evident, address the problem. • Be aware of other fireground operations.

  14. Methods of Protecting Material Goods • “Removing items from harm’s way” approach can be determined quickly. • Consider if items can be moved quicker than covered. • Items in the way of an attack crew should be moved.

  15. Arranging Furniture and Salvage Cover Deployment

  16. Shoulder Toss

  17. Balloon Toss

  18. Water Removal

  19. Salvage Operations in Sprinkled Buildings • Emphasize finding sprinkler shutoff valve. • PIV and OS&Y valves used to shut down system • Shut down the system after all firefighting is completed. • If valve is not found, use wedges.

  20. Outside OS&Y Valve

  21. Overhaul Tools and Equipment

  22. Overhaul Operations • Overhaul begins after fire investigation concerns have been addressed. • Strip exposed coverings in fire area. • Check for extension. • Visually inspect wooden structures. • Remove insulation to expose areas. • Smallest embers can ignite after hours.

  23. Overhauling Roofs • This can be a very long and tedious process. • Crawl spaces create many challenges. • Weather can have an impact on roof overhaul. • You may use electronic sensors to check for hot spots.

  24. Electronic Sensor

  25. Revisits of the Involved Structures • It is important to revisit the scene of the incident. • Good customer service • Check for smoldering and check need for occupant assistance.

  26. Debris Removal • Remove debris while searching for hidden fires. • Remove loose material. • After complete removal, cover debris.
