  1. EMPHASIS: INVERSION

  2. Grammar Forms of inversion: • When the verb is used in a form with an auxiliary, the structure is adverbial + auxiliary + main verb. Ex: HARDLY HAD I WOKEN UP WHEN THE PHONE RANG

  3. More Grammar • When the verb is used in a form with more than one auxiliary, the structure is: adverbial + first auxiliary + subject + other auxiliaries + main verb. Ex: NEVER HAVE I BEEN WITNESS TO SO MANY COWS IN ONE FIELD BEFORE.

  4. Even More Grammar • With present/past simple, the structure is adverbial + do/did + subject + main verb. Ex: NEVER DID I THINK I’D WANT TO BE HERE AGAIN. • With the simple form of be, the main verb is placed before the subject. Ex: FIERCELY WAS HIS HONOUR DEFENDED.
