  1. Cell Growth IAN LHP #88 IAN RHP #89 • Questions p.243 #1-4

  2. What problems does growth cause?

  3. Limits to cell growth • As a cell grows, it: • places more demand on its DNA. • uses food and oxygen faster. • has trouble exchanging materials across its cell membrane. • Nutrients and waste

  4. Ratio • Relation between two measurements • Can be expressed as a fraction (1/2) • or with a colon (1:2)

  5. Ratio of surface area to volume • To calculate Surface Area • Add the area of each “face” • Area=length x width [A=L x W] • For a cube: surface area = L x W x 6 • cm2 • To calculate Volume: • For a box: Volume = length x width x height • cm3

  6. Cell Division • Process where cell divides into two daughter cells.

  7. Cell Division • Before a cell can divide it must copy or replicate its genetic information. • Each daughter cell receives its own copy of the parent cell’s DNA. • When a cell divides it reduces volume and increases the surface area.

  8. IAN LHP • Questions p.243 #1-4
