  2. Kiev Declines – Moscow Rises Territory split among princes  territory fragments with in-fighting and attacks. Mongols invade and conquer. Impose taxes to gain wealth – taxes paid to preserve customs/government. Improved communication, built roads, Russian language develops. Lithuanians/Poles take land – begin rivalry with Slavs/Mongols (still exists today).
