  1. September 12, 2012 A Long Way Gone Flex Days

  2. DLT and Agenda I can actively listen and discuss in order to participate in Socratic Seminar • Bell Ringer • Flashback Questions for Chapter 5 • Read Chapter 6 • Chapter 6 Questions • Return or re-check library books • Seminar • PAT Time

  3. Flashback Chapter 5 • A = True B= False • Most of the rebels were at least 25. • The rebels captured Ishmael and the other boys and took them to a village. • The boys were just playing a game when they stole the corn from the little boy. • Ishmael struggled internally with the disrespect that the rebels showed the older man. • The old man was brutally murdered. • The boys were unable to escape from the rebels. • The boys seemed to be in a different world after they escaped the rebels in the village.

  4. Chapter 6 • Why were people afraid of groups of boys traveling together? • What is special about Beah’s memory of his older brother skipping rocks? • Why do you think it was important for Beah to share his pre-war personality? What is ironic about it?

  5. Respond “This is one of the consequences of the civil war. People stop trusting each other, and every stranger becomes an enemy.” In response to the quote, what happens to people and communities when certain types of people are feared? What happens to the feared? What happens to the fearful?

  6. Seminar Questions • You will be participating in another Socratic Seminar. • Today the questions will be provided. Each of you will draw a question and you and the class will discuss. • You are responsible for keeping the seminar discussion going. • You will receive a popsicle stick once you have participated. You will need to earn at least 4 popsicle sticks. You will not receive participation points if you do not have a popsicle stick. • Exit Slip • You need to write down at least 1 point that you like that was made or 1 question that you have based on the seminar. Please write the number of popsicle sticks you earned at the bottom of your exit slip.
