  5. Graduation Program:80 Credits Required To Graduate 1. Required 48 credits: • Language Arts 10, 11, 12 12 credits • Social Studies 10 4 credits • Social Studies 11 or 12 4 credits • Science 10 4 credits • Science 11 or 12 4 credits • Mathematics 10 4 credits • Mathematics 11 or 12 4 credits • Physical Education 10 4 credits • FNA or ASK 10, 11 or 12 4 credits • Planning 10 4 credits 2. Graduation Transitions 12 4 credits ------------------------------- 3. Electives (Grade 10, 11 and 12) 28 credits TOTAL 80 credits A minimum of 16 credits must be at the Grade 12 level. This includes 4 credits for a Language Arts 12 course, but does not include the 4 credits for Graduation Portfolio Assessment.

Timeline - October • Read the Howl every day • Check with your counsellor to ensure courses meet ministry graduation requirements • Arrange an informal meeting with your counsellor or Mrs. Baker to begin post-secondary/career planning • ESL students: register to write the TOEFL EXAM if you have been in an English speaking country for less than 5 years; check each post-secondary institution for their English language requirements and second language requirements. • BCIT applications varying deadlines; check carefully for additional requirements: e.g. Resume, references, statement of intent, interim transcript • Most BC Post Secondary Institutions are now open for Registration • Apply for a social insurance number if you do not already have one

Timeline – October continued… Check post secondary admission dates, courses, programs, scholarships, housing, deadline dates, open-houses, presentation visits etc. Begin your personal file: reference letters, personal letters, resume, copies of all documents, etc. (note: students new to Canada require certified copies of immigration papers for post-secondary applications) Book an appointment with Career Resource Facilitator, Mrs. Jones DO NOT give mis-information on an application form Register with your counsellor for Language Challenge Exams.

Timeline – November / December NOVEMBER • Review your transcript verification form with your counsellor • Complete a BRAG sheet • Request any reference letters you may need; supply the referee with detailed information about yourself (see attached Brag Sheet) • Continue to read the Howl to find out about Scholarship Opportunities • Attend the Canadian Universities Event on November 16th at Heritage Woods from 9-10:30 am DECEMBER • Grad photos December 7, 8, 9, 10 at Artona Studio ???????????? • Prepare for January exams • Eastern University applications usually due by now • Register to take provincial exams for courses you are not currently enrolled in. Go to the main office and see Mrs. Johnson

Timeline – Jan / Feb JANUARY • Record the exact time and date of your government examinations; get photo identification for the exams (if you miss the exam your next chance to write will be June) • Major scholarships arrive at the school; check with Mrs. Jones/ Ms. Johal • Plan for a spring visit to your post-secondary institution • Review post secondary application process • Fill out Post Secondary Choices form online: https://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams/tsw/tsw/student/welcome.jsp? • This form gives permission to the Ministry of Education to send your marks to the post secondary schools of your choice. *Not sure this is how we want to do this?????????? FEBRUARY • Due date for applications to BC universities: Feb 28th, 2010 • If necessary, register now for housing at post-secondary institution

  10. Timeline – March / April MARCH • Attend scholarship meeting regarding the application process for local awards and scholarships. Tues March 16 2010.???? • Ensure you have everything in order for Grad Transitions12(DO NOT leave it until the last minute!!!) • Attend the District Career Fair : March 18 at Centennial APRIL • Let the office know of any changes in your address • Semester 2 midterm marks and semester 1 final marks are electronically transferred to post-secondary institutions; offers of admission are made in May • Grade 12 assembly during PACK on grad, scholarships and valedictorian info??????????????????? • Complete local scholarships/awards applications--Monday, April 19 deadline ?????????????????/

Timeline – May / June MAY • Prepare for June exams • Student Loan applications: www.canlearn.ca; www.studentaidbc.ca • Advisors visit from post-secondary institutions • Valedictorian speeches and election during PACk???????????? • Sunday, May 23rd, 2009 Grad Dinner Dance & Aftergrad JUNE • Year-end Awards Night June 2nd, 2010 • Record the exact time and date of your government examinations • Mandatory assembly for commencement rehearsal: ???? • Commencement Ceremony, Sunday June 13th, time???at the Orpheum JULY • Transcript and Dogwood Diploma mailed to your home at the end of July • Exam marks available on website: www.bced.gov.bc.ca/exams

PROVINCIAL EXAMS Do I need to write provincial exams? • YES for scholarship opportunities • YES for English 12 / Communications 12 • YES for the opportunity to raise your mark • UBC, SFU and UVIC will use the higher of your Class mark or blended mark for all courses that offer optional exams • You are not required to write optional exams to graduate from high school

  13. Survival Guide: Financial Aid Grade 11 & 12 marks are often considered You may get money for many reasons: grades, involvement in school, volunteer work, financial need, parent association with organizations… You must APPLY to be eligible Make sure you have a Social Insurance Number

  16. Provincial Scholarships Must be Canadian or permanent resident Achieve at least a B in Eng 12 IF you achieve 86% or higher on 3 provincial exams (which may include English) the award = $1000 IF you rank in the top 20 in the province the award= $2500

  17. Reference Letters • Fill in a brag sheet (available in counselling and in the Career Centre) • Fill in details, and then ask the staff member who knows you best to write the letter • Please give as much notice as possible

Healthy Living: · Daily Physical Activity – 150 minutes/week ¨ You must complete the verification forms and Activity Log and have them signed by a Graduation Transitions teacher if your activity was completed outside of the school. · Healthy Living Plan – Nutrition and Activity assignment ¨ · Healthy Living Plan – Stress Management and Decision Making Process ¨Assignment B. Community Connections: · 30 Hours Work and/or Volunteer Experience ¨ You must include pay stubs and/or letters of reference with the evaluation sheet · Employability Skills Evaluation sheet and description of experience ¨ C. Graduation Transitions Plan: · Current Résumé ¨ · Cover Letter ¨ · Post-Secondary Plans: Studies or Work ¨ · Financial Plan ¨ D. Exit Interview: · Interviews will be arranged by the student at any time during the ¨ Grade 12 year, or upon completion of parts A, B & C *Start to work on these elements NOW if you have not yet done so. These cannot be done at the last minute as they take time to create and/or accumulate. ______________________

LPI – Language Proficiency Index • Cost $57 paid online at www.lpi.ubc.ca • Deadline for registration is midnight Sunday March 28th, 2010. • No walk-ins permitted. • Registration opens January 1st 2010 • Written at Pinetree on Thursday April 8th @ 1:30PM, Room TBA How is it used? If you do not meet the English Language entrance requirements based on the Final Gr. 12 English mark the LPI score can be used as a substitute to meet that requirement. For example Douglas College - student must have a min. C in English 12 or B in Communications 12 or an LPI score of 4 or greater SFU - students must have a min. 75% or higher as their English 12 final mark, or 60-74% in English 12 plus a score of 4 or greater on the essay section of the LPI and a 50% average on the remaining areas. UBC-student must have min. 75% or higher as their English 12 final mark, all students who do not reach this requirement must take the LPI and achieve a minimum score of level 5 (30/40) on the essay section of the examination before enrolling in any English class at UBC

  20. Course Challenge If you applied to Challenge a Language Course make note of the dates of the exams which will be held in Delta. *please note: Mandarin 12 students will be informed by letter which of the two dates their exam will be on (January 30th or 31st, 2010)

  24. Post Secondary Education: Simon Fraser University Beginning September 2009 SFU no longer requires students to write optional provincial exams. Students are still required to write the English 12 Exam and any other exams needed for graduation (i.e. Grade 10/11 provincials) If a student does choose to write the optional grade 12 provincial exam, the results will be used by SFU only if they increase the student’s admission average

SFU Quantitative Requirements(this has not changed) • 70% in Principles Math 11 or 12 depending on the program you are applying to OR • 60-69% in Principles Math 11 or 12 plus a score at least 20/30 on a diagnostic skills test (Q Placement test) at SFU before beginning their quantitative courses OR • 60-69% in Principles Math 11 or 12 plus complete within your 1st year a Foundations of Analytical and Quantitative Reasoning course with a grade of C or better before beginning quantitative courses at SFU

SFU English Language Skills Requirements (this has not changed) • 75% or higher in English 12 OR • A grade of 60-74% in Eng 12 plus a score of 4 on the essay section of the LPI exam and a minimum score of 50% on all other parts of the LPI exam OR • A grade of 60-74% in Eng 12 plus with in your 1st year complete of a Foundations in Academic Literacy course with a C or higher

SFU Program Requirements • Please note that in addition to the information provided you will need to research the specific requirements for each faculty/program as there are additional requirements • For example: • All programs in Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences require English 12 and three other approved grade 12 courses. • All programs in the Faculty of Science require Chem 11, Physics 11, English 12, Principles of Math 12 and two science 12 courses

SFU Business (New Changes) • Academic Requirements • English 12, Math 12 + two other provincially examinable grade 12 courses (95% average required) • Broad Based Application • Demonstrates excellence, leadership and/or achievement in extra-curricular area(s) such as: entrepreneurship, social activism, athletics, arts, community leadership and/or involvement • Admission Average • 80% or higher is required for broad-based admission

  31. Post Secondary Education: UBC Vancouver / Okanogan General Admission Grade 11 Course Requirements: • English 11, Social Studies 11, Pr. Math 11, a Language 11 • Beginner’s is not accepted, External Lang 11 is accepted • an Academic Science 11 (Bi 11, Ch 11, E. Sc 11, Ph 11) Entrance Averages: • Based on 4 Grade 12 Courses • English 12 plus • 3 other academic 12’s BC First Nations Studies 12 , English Lit 12, French 12, German 12, History 12, Japanese 12, Principles of Math 12, Spanish 12, Biology 12, Chemistry 12, Geography 12, Geology 12, Physics 12, Mandarin 12 • You are not required to write the Provincial Exams, other than those required for high school graduation (i.e.. Grade 10/11 provincials) • If you elect to write an optional Provincial Exam, the admission decision will incorporate the results only if they increase your admission average.

Your placement will be determined from your LPI score • Therefore it is recommended you write the LPI
