  1. WELCOME TO THE EUROPEAN INSTITUTE Introduction by Prof Kevin Featherstone Head of the EI

You are joining the European Institute: • Multi-disciplinary ‘Institute’: • economics; political economy; public policy; international relations; law; history; social policy; politics, geography and philosophy • Ranked first for research: European Studies • by U.K. Government (HEFCE) • ‘Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence’ • Arguably, we are the leading venue for public debate about Europe in the U.K.

Our Teaching • The European Institute teaches post-graduates only, with a very wide array of programmes: • MSc European Political Economy; • MSc Politics & Government in the EU; • MSc European Studies: Ideas and Identities; • MSc European Studies (Research); • Double Degree with Sciences Po, Paris; • MPA in European Public and Economic Policy; • MPhil & PhD

  4. Our EI students: We accept about 230 students per year From many different countries: up to 35 nationalities. With no nationality comprising more than 12% of the total Makes for a great mix in seminars…

  5. LSE & Europe… LSE – has one of the largest concentrations of social scientific expertise on Europe in the world. European Institute collaborates with Departments of Government, International Relations; Law; Social Policy; Economic History; Philosophy. International links: e.g. Sciences-Po (Paris); European University Institute (Florence). EI research: cross disciplinary, addressing major contemporary issues.

EI public lectures Unrivalled number, range and profile on Europe: over 130 events per year Recently: public lectures by Jean Claude Trichet, Herman van Rompuy….This Term: Austrian President, Prof. Norman Davies, Portuguese Foreign Minister….You’ll need to apply via ‘Events’ for tickets. Also seminars in evening open to all: e.g. Cañada Blanch Centre, Hellenic Observatory, Turkey… Extras: EU450 Europe: Contemporary Issues (Mondays 2-3pm; starts Week 6).

  9. Our local history... Site of our own EI building: burial ground where poor buried in a mass vault, with body-snatchers in 1850s [The Times’]. Lincoln’s Inn Fields: largest public square in London since 1630s. An area of public execution as late as C19th. Cooper’s Restaurant: site of Duke’s Theatre where Handel’s last two operas were first performed in 1740-41. George IV pub – a pub on site since 1860s.

Your Academic Adviser • Academic staff member from EI (or GV, IR for PGEU) • Academic guidance and feedback on progress and to discuss any academic problems • Pastoral support on non-academic issues and refer students to appropriate support agencies within the School • Regular contact with the student on academic and pastoral issues: KEEP IN TOUCH • Agree students’ course choices. Discuss dissertation ideas • Liaise with the Programme Director and School about any student whose progress is not satisfactory • Writer of references

The MSc Student Adviser • This year it is Claire Gordon • Act as a point of contact for individual student concerns about teaching within the Institute where the student’s Academic Adviser, Course Convenor or Programme Director is not available • Assist individuals with essay writing and study skills where required • Act as a point of contact for any pastoral concerns that may arise, including from overseas students who are having difficulty adjusting to London life

  12. The EI Office • European Institute is in Cowdray House, Portugal Street: • opposite George IV pub, between LSE Bookshop and Library. • General Office, COW 2.15: • Enquiries: weekdays 2pm-4.30pm

  13. What you need to do (1) Register- tomorrow • Register at the European Institute General Office (COW 2.15) and • Collect your MSc Handbook • Open between 11.30am-4.30pm tomorrow.

  14. What you need to do (2) Wednesday: collect Academic Adviser’s name • Check the noticeboards on the Ground Floor, First Floor or Second Floor of Cowdray House. Look under your degree programme for the name of your Academic Adviser and for details of your first meeting with him/her.

  16. What You Need to Do (4) Meet Academic Adviser • You must see your Adviser: check when he/she will see you - either • From 3pm Thursday onwards; or • from 3pm Friday.

  17. What You Need to Do (5) Go to Options Fair - FRIDAY • MSc European Political Economy and MSc European Studies: Ideas and Identities: Friday 10.30am-11.30am in CLM 6.02. • MSc Politics and Government in the European Union: Friday 11.30am-12.30pm in CLM 6.02.

  18. What you need to do (6) Choose Options • Check times/rooms of courses: go to LSE webpage: ‘Timetables’. Avoid clashes. • Enter your course choices via LSE for You. • Sign up for a seminar group for each course via LSE for You. • Get course materials: reading lists from Moodle. Check books. Go to Library induction on Friday afternoon.

  19. What you need to do (7) Register your Courses • You must discuss your course choices with your Academic Adviser, then: • Complete your (MSc) course and seminar registration online via LSE For Youby no later than 17 October. • Teaching begins week of Monday 3 October.

  20. Other Important Meetings • Introduction to LSE’s Careers Service (specific to EI students): Wednesday 28 September 3pm-4pm in NAB LG.08 (Sheikh Zayed Theatre) • Introduction to LSE’s Teaching and Learning Centre/Language Centre/Library: Friday 30 September 2pm-3pm in E171 (New Theatre)

  21. Reminder: where to get information Your EI Programme Handbook Webpages: EI and LSE. Moodle. EI emails to you with important information. EI General Office: COW 2.15; ext. 6839,7537. Normally: 2pm – 4.30pm. Your Adviser – office hours, email

  22. Your study room at LSE: • Research students: COW G.11 (ground floor of Cowdray House). • MSc students: SHFQ2 (Sheffield Street). Please obtain access code from the General Office.

  23. Be patient… • Registration & first weeks: confusing. • Staff are busy & you have lots of information to digest. • Things get clearer when you’ve selected your courses & you know your timetable. • Plan your work….over the term: time management
