    2. What is Secondhand Smoke (ETS)? Environmental Tobacco Smoke Secondhand smoke and passive smoking Sidestream smoke and Mainstream smoke Contains over 4000 chemicals, 43 known carcinogens, and 200 poisons National Cancer Institute, 1999 ETS is more commonly known as secondhand smoke or passive smoke. It is made up of sidestream smoke and mainstream smoke. Sidestream smoke is the smoke which comes from the cigarette itself. Mainstream smoke is what a smoker exhales into the environment. These two forms of smoke contain over 4000 chemicals, 43 carcinogens-the stuff that causes cancer and over 200 poisons. Can somebody name a poison???? Formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, carbon monoxide ETS is more commonly known as secondhand smoke or passive smoke. It is made up of sidestream smoke and mainstream smoke. 4. What are the FACTS about Secondhand Smoke? National Florida Florida Clean Indoor Air Act Smoke-Free for Health vs. Big Tobacco So who can give me a fact? National – will compare Big Tobacco facts vs. current national facts Florida facts will review state related facts to secondhand smoke Then we will go over the Florida Clean Indoor Air Act and discuss upcoming state initiative Smoke Free for Health. So who can give me a fact? National – will compare Big Tobacco facts vs. current national facts Florida facts will review state related facts to secondhand smoke Then we will go over the Florida Clean Indoor Air Act and discuss upcoming state initiative Smoke Free for Health.

    5. National Let’s start off with some national facts. We will compare these facts with Big Tobacco’ facts.Let’s start off with some national facts. We will compare these facts with Big Tobacco’ facts.

    6. National 88% percent of all non-smokers in the United States are exposed to secondhand smoke. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Exposure to Secondhand Smoke Widespread, Journal of the American Medical Association, Vol. 275, No. 16, April 23, 1996 If there are 67 people in this room that means that 54 of you are exposed. If there are 67 people in this room that means that 54 of you are exposed.

    7. National Simple separation of smokers and non-smokers within the same airspace does not eliminate exposure of non-smokers to secondhand smoke. Surgeon General Report, 1986 As you can tell when you walked in this room today…the smoking section at a restaurant is like a peeing section in the pool!!As you can tell when you walked in this room today…the smoking section at a restaurant is like a peeing section in the pool!!

    8. National Non-smokers exposed to secondhand smoke for just 30 minutes experience hardening of the arteries. Journal of the American Medical Association, 2001 Even though you aren’t smoking you experience a physiological response from breathing in someone else’s smoke.Even though you aren’t smoking you experience a physiological response from breathing in someone else’s smoke.

    9. National Secondhand smoke is the 3rd leading cause of preventable death in the US Killing 53,000 non-smokers every year National Cancer Institute, 1999 That is almost 150 non-smokers every day!!That is almost 150 non-smokers every day!!

    10. National For every 8 smokers the tobacco industry kills, it takes one non-smoker with them. Glantz, Stan and Parmley, W., "Passive Smoking and Heart Disease: Epidemiology, Physiology, and Biochemistry," Circulation 1991 According to Glantz and Parmley If you are around smokers, you could be one of those killed by Big Tobacco. Roughly, eight of you will die of smoking related illness without ever picking up a cigaretteAccording to Glantz and Parmley If you are around smokers, you could be one of those killed by Big Tobacco. Roughly, eight of you will die of smoking related illness without ever picking up a cigarette

    11. National Secondhand smoke contributes to 6,200 preventable childhood deaths a year. “Tobacco and Children; An Economic Evaluation of the Medical Effects of Parental Smoking,” Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, 1997 Children really suffer from secondhand smoke. They suffer from illnesses like asthma, SIDS, increased colds and allergies. They suffer from ear infections, bronchitis and low birth weight too. Research has also shown a decreased learning ability of children.Children really suffer from secondhand smoke. They suffer from illnesses like asthma, SIDS, increased colds and allergies. They suffer from ear infections, bronchitis and low birth weight too. Research has also shown a decreased learning ability of children.

    12. National Tobacco companies have paid scientists to write letters to newspapers and specialist journals discrediting research showing a link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer. Associated Press, “Tobacco Industry Paid Scientists,” 4 August 1998 But the truth is out there With our help we can put an end to the misinformation campaignBut the truth is out there With our help we can put an end to the misinformation campaign

    13. National Waiters and waitresses have nearly four times the rate of lung cancer and twice the rate of heart disease as any other profession. Journal of the American Medical Association, 1993 According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, if you work in the restaurant business you are four times more likely to get lung cancer.According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, if you work in the restaurant business you are four times more likely to get lung cancer.

    14. National Heavily exposed restaurant workers can inhale chemicals equivalent to actively smoking two packs of cigarettes per day. Journal of the American Medical Association, 1993 Who works in a restaurant? Of those who do, how many do not smoke? Well, think again.Who works in a restaurant? Of those who do, how many do not smoke? Well, think again.

    15. National The tobacco industry argues that eating establishments and other businesses where people gather will suffer enormous financial losses from smoking bans. Yet recent research in the US has found these claims to be greatly exaggerated. Stanton Glantz and L.R. Smith, “The Effect of Ordinances Requiring Smoke-Free Restaurants and Bars on Revenues: A Follow-Up,” American Journal of Public Health, Vol. 87 No. 10, October 1997 Read this slide Basically Big Tobacco argues that if a business is smoke-free they will lose money. Will it cost more money to be smoke-free or have a separate ventilation system, smoking section signs, burns in the chairs? Remember, the truth is out there.Read this slide Basically Big Tobacco argues that if a business is smoke-free they will lose money. Will it cost more money to be smoke-free or have a separate ventilation system, smoking section signs, burns in the chairs? Remember, the truth is out there.

    16. National Researchers found that smoke-free restaurant ordinances had no effect on restaurant sales in major cities in California and Colorado. Glantz and Smith, “The Effect of Ordinances Requiring Smoke-free Restaurants on Restaurant Sales,” American Journal of Public Health 1994; 84: 1081-1085 New research every day proves Big Tobacco is wrong. The state of Texas had the same results in April this year.New research every day proves Big Tobacco is wrong. The state of Texas had the same results in April this year.

    17. National Tobacco companies have secretly funded businesses and research institutes to minimize the dangers of workplace secondhand smoke through suspect research methods and advocacy work. Morton Mintz, “The Building Doctor,” Washington Post Magazine, 24 March 1996; The Tobacco Institute, Inc. Minutes of Meeting of the Executive Committee, December 10, 1987 Big tobacco has secretly funded research. Can you believe that!!! They spend a lot of money to hide the fact that secondhand smoke kills. Even the name ETS is a cover-up, created to sound less harmful than secondhand smoke. Do you think everyday people are going to get upset about environmental tobacco smoke or secondhand smoke? Big tobacco has secretly funded research. Can you believe that!!! They spend a lot of money to hide the fact that secondhand smoke kills. Even the name ETS is a cover-up, created to sound less harmful than secondhand smoke. Do you think everyday people are going to get upset about environmental tobacco smoke or secondhand smoke?

    18. National Employees exposed to secondhand smoke on the job are 34% more likely to get lung cancer. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1996 How many of you have a job?? How many of you who have a job are exposed to secondhand smoke?? If you spend eight hours a day, forty hours a week in those conditions what do you think the risks are??How many of you have a job?? How many of you who have a job are exposed to secondhand smoke?? If you spend eight hours a day, forty hours a week in those conditions what do you think the risks are??

    19. National According to the National Cancer Institute, teenaged workers, those aged 15-19, are the least likely to be protected by smoke-free workplace policies. Gerlach, et al., 1997 So, it is time to take a stand and be heard about what is important to your health. So, it is time to take a stand and be heard about what is important to your health.

    20. National Big Tobacco has known of the dangers of secondhand smoke for over 30 years. The tobacco industry considered this knowledge so potentially devastating that it fights smoke-free ordinances with a vengeance. Headden, S. “Secondhand Smokescreen: Tobacco Firms Worried for Years About Risks of Passive Smoking,” U.S. News, August 3, 1998 In other words, they fight ordinances that protect us against secondhand smoke. We even have evidence of this in Florida. In other words, they fight ordinances that protect us against secondhand smoke. We even have evidence of this in Florida.

    21. Florida We are now going to talk about some Florida facts and how Big Tobacco fights our ordinances and initiatives. We are now going to talk about some Florida facts and how Big Tobacco fights our ordinances and initiatives.

    22. Florida Research indicates that approximately 70,000 work places and 12,000 restaurants in Florida allow smoking on their premises. 5.5 million Floridians are exposed every week. American Cancer Society-Florida Division, 2001 Based on the data, many Floridians come into contact with secondhand smoke…so if you are around it, you are at risk. Which is 82,000 businesses combined. That’s staggering!!! That means 5.5 millions workers and customers are exposed to secondhand smoke every week.Based on the data, many Floridians come into contact with secondhand smoke…so if you are around it, you are at risk. 23. Florida 692,000 youth are exposed to secondhand smoke at home. CDC, “State-Specific Prevalence of Cigarette Smoking Among Adults, and Children’s and Adolescents’ Exposure to Environmental Tobacco Smoke-United States, 1996” MMWR 46(44), 1997 That is too many youth exposed to secondhand smoke as far as we are concerned. Think about it – your major portion of exposure is at home. That is too many youth exposed to secondhand smoke as far as we are concerned. Think about it – your major portion of exposure is at home.

    24. Florida Exposure to secondhand smoke is the 2nd most powerful risk factor for current and lifetime use of tobacco. Bauer, U., & Johnson, T., Florida Youth Tobacco Survey 2001:Monitoring Program Outcomes in 2001. Florida Department of Health, Bureau of Epidemiology, October 22, 2001 Next to having two or more friends who smoke. If your peers smoke and you are exposed to secondhand smoke, you are at greater risk for lifetime use. It is easier to change the environment you are in versus your friends.Next to having two or more friends who smoke. 25. Florida In 2001, 61.9% of middle school youth were exposed to secondhand smoke And 70.9% of high school youth were exposed to secondhand smoke Bauer, U., & Johnson, T., Florida Youth Tobacco Survey 2001:Monitoring Program Outcomes in 2001.
