  3. What Was Harper’s Ferry? • Harper’s Ferry was a small town with a Federal Arsenal (or Armory) in Virginia. • In 1734, Robert Harper established a ferry across the Potomic River, it later became an armory where federal weapons were stored, it was a major fort.

  4. What was John Brown’s Raid • October 16, 1859, John Brown and 18 others voyaged to Harper’s Ferry, his plan was to start a slavery rebellion, he had planned to seize arms and ammunition from the amory and give these materials to slaves in the area, and start a southward slave rebellion. He easily took the Federal arsenal but slaves did not support him. Local people in the militia surrounded him and overall, Col. Robert E. Lee entered the armory and arrested John Brown with the support of his Marines. He was tried for treason and sentenced to be hanged on December 2nd, 1859. The rebellion failed overall.

  5. What is the Significance? • Further divided the North and South parties. • He was admired as a martyr by some in the North, but others did not agree with him. • The South was outraged by this, they felt that Brown had ruined their property and way of life by destroying the armory and threatening their lifestyle. They blamed Lincoln, and what was at the time, the Republican Party. They did not approve of his future presidency. • People who wanted to compromise stopped calling for compromise and neglected the situation.
