  1. DELTA Project Overview Heinz-Dieter Nuhn – LCLS Undulator Group Leader Presented at LCLS-II Physics Meeting Tuesday, October 11, 2011

  2. Controls & Software Vacuum chamber Driver Driver Support Support Existing Girder (U33) Helical Undulator R&D (DELTA) • Helical undulator to enhance taper and to provide circularly polarized (soft) x-rays • Cornell’s Delta undulator is a novel, compact design that fits straightforwardly onto existing LCLS girder • Plan to build and test a 3.2-m Delta @ U33 Cornel Delta undulator (A. Temnykh)

  3. Variable Phase Undulators 4 Movable PM Quadrants Four independent quadrants of permanent magnets move longitudinally at fixed gap. By sliding the arrays it is possible to control the K value over full range and to control the polarization of the radiation emitted Soft X-Ray Polarization Control Page 3

  4. DELTA Project Synopsis Conceptual Design is in preparation Gene Kraft the Project Engineer Sasha Temnykh will provide technical support Rough cost estimate: $1.5M Rough schedule estimate: 2 years

  5. DELTA is Part of LCLS Short to Mid Term Expansions A: Present 25 Regular LCLS Und. 8 SHABs B: Scheduled for Jan 2012 HXRSS 13 Regular LCLS Und 4 SHABs Higher Brightness at 8 keV 15 Regular LCLS Und. C: Option after Jan 2013 to support stronger tapering HXRSS 4 Regular + 13 Weaker Und Increased Intensity 15 Regular LCLS Und. D: Proposed R&D (after 2013) DELTA HXRSS 4 Regular + 12 Weaker Und 15 Regular LCLS Und. Polarization Control E: Add SXR Self Seeding DELTA SXRSS HXRSS 7 Reg Und 7 Reg Und Higher SXR Brightness 4 Regular + 12 Weaker Und DELTA F: Expand (after 2015) SXRSS HXRSS 7 Reg Und 7 Reg Und 4 Regular + 17 Weaker Und 120 GW FEL Sash Temnikh will now talk about the DELTA undulator =>
