  2. WHAT IS A RECIPE? A recipe is a list of ingredients and the directions for preparing the food. A tested recipe is a recipe that has been examined and tried by professional culinary experts and proven to work.

  3. WHERE CAN YOU FIND RECIPES?

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF RECIPES STANDARD FORMAT NARRATIVE FORMAT APPLE KIWI SMOOTHIE 1 small apple, peeled, cut into chunks1 kiwifruit, peeled, cut into chunks4 medium fresh strawberries2/3 cup (150 mL) low fat strawberry yogurt1/3 cup (75 mL) apple juice In blender, place ingredients. Cover; blend on high speed about 30 seconds or until smooth. Pour into 2 glasses. Serve immediately. CHOCOLATE CHIP MUFFINS Measure and mix together 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, ½ cup sugar, 1 tbsp baking soda, and ¼ tsp salt. Stir in 1 cup chocolate chips. In a separate bowl, combine 1 egg, 1 cup milk, and ¼ cup melted butter. Stir wet ingredients into flour mixture. Do not overmix. Bake at 375oF for 20 minutes.   5. OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RECIPES • Preparation tasksinclude those actions that should be done before actually preparing the food. Eg) chop, grate, cube • An ingredient is a food which is mixed with other foods. • An abbreviation is a shortened form of a word. • We will abbreviate measurements in our recipes. • The yield of a recipe is the number of servings of a food which a recipe will make.

WELL WRITTEN RECIPES INCLUDE • A List of ingredients in the order of their use. • Give the exact type of ingredient. • The amount (measurement) of each ingredient. • Directions in step-by-step order or in logical order. • Types and sizes of equipment needed. • The cooking (cooling) time and temperature. • Yield, number of servings the recipe will make.

  7. Once you have chosen a recipe, there are three steps you should take before you begin the food preparation. Read the recipe completely, being sure you understand it. Gather your ingredients and equipment. Perform any preparation tasks, such as: greasing the pans, preheating the oven, washing and chopping vegetables, etc.
