  2. Welcome! • Introductions: Steering Committee Members • Please MUTE your phone if possible to minimize background noise. • Please ASK QUESTIONS and for more detail!! • This Webinar will cover an overview of the program and some first-hand experience from our Returning Coaches Panel.

  3. The Envirothon Gets Students….. Outdoors to experience Massachusetts ecosystems. Working alongside natural resource professionals to learn about the interactions of local forests, water, wildlife, and soil.

  4. The Envirothon Gets Students….. Developing skills to participate in community decisions and action. Testing their environmental knowledge, skills, and teamwork in a challenging competition.

  5. The Envirothon Involves… Over 500 Young People and their Coaches More than 40 statewide communities are represented Committee Members and Volunteers from a variety of Federal, State Agencies, and nongovernmental organizations

  6. The Envirothon Involves… Current Issue Judges Natural resource professionals from around the state who are experts in the Current Issue topic

  7. Envirothon is a Year-Round Experience • Three Workshops Throughout the School Year: • Fall – UMass, Amherst • Winter – Worcester Technical High School, Worcester • Spring – Alden Research Laboratory, Holden

  8. Envirothon is a Year-Round Experience • The Current Issue Topic for Community Research • 2013-2014: Sustainable Local Agriculture • Recent Topics Include: Forestry, Storm water, Renewable Energy, • Invasive Species, and Wetland Protection

Envirothon is a Year-Round Experience The Envirothon Competition Day May 15, 2014 at Sholan Farms, Leominster Teams Test Their Skills and KnowledgeDivided into sub-teams students cover all elements of the competition: Four Ecostations (soil, water, forest, and wildlife) and a Current Issue presentation

  10. The Envirothon Competition Day • A New Format Allows for More Opportunities: • `` • Three 65-minute sessions • Up to 10 students per team • Ecostation sessions may include a brief demonstration/ activity as well as the short answer/hands-on test

The Envirothon Competition Day Students Share their Experience At the Lunchtime Roundtable session teams are encouraged to share their community research and meet with natural resource experts The Awards The day concludes with the announcement of final competition scores along with of Community Research and Action awards
