System z Linux & WebLogic Install Prerequisites • WebLogic is referred to as Oracle WebLogic Server 11gR1 (10.3.2) and "Oracle WebLogic Server 11g“ • Download from OTN the "generic" Oracle package installer (it is not specific to Linux on System z) • X-Term; RealVNC, TightVNC….others • www.realvnc.com • www.tightvnc.com • Red Hat EL 4 (UL7+), Red Hat EL 5 (UL3+) • Novell SuSe 10 (SP2+) • IBM Java 6 64bit (SR4 or higher) product is NOT supplied with any of the Linux distributions, so you will need to download at the following url: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/linux/download.html • Installation Modes : Console, Graphical, Silent (Linux for System z Release Notes recommend using Console mode) • Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) GUI interface to install WebLogic

  7. Component Installation Steps… • Preparation for Linux Install on System z (SLES10 or RedHat) • Install Novell SLES10 SP2 or RedHat • Novell SLES10 used in examples that follow • Install IBM Java 6 64bit (SP7) • Install WebLogic

Installing Linux on System z – Step 1 (SLES10) • Linux must first be installed either standalone in a Logical Partition (LPAR) or under z/VM • This example will install Novell SuSe 10 SP2 Linux under z/VM • With a z/VM instance created: • a parmfile, kernel and an initrd file are FTPed to z/VM • These 3 files are then executed, and as part of the execution, we IPL the kernel in storage and start the install • In LPAR mode; we will mount the 1st SLES10 CD #1 into the HMC 

Installing Novell SLES10 SP2 – Step 2 • Easier to unload the SuSE CDs (usually 4 of them) to disk prior to starting the install • Verify that all the media is unloaded and a mount point has been established • Install using an X-Term session or your Browser • http://xx.xx.xx.xx:5801 (where xx.xx.xx.xx is your IP address) to access the install panels within z/VM • Start an X-Term (VNC) session • All examples that follow use a VNC X-Term session

Installing Novell SLES10 SP2 – Step 2-continued • Open the VNC icon on your desktop and enter the IP address and 1. “:1” designates the VNC server instance to be used. • http://xx.xx.xx.xx:1 • Installation panels will prompt for configuration parameters, beginning with Language. • Continue on and select options by clicking thru configuration panels

Use the following command: • tar –xzvf /<enter your directory>/ibm-java-sdk-6.0-7.0-linux-s390x-tgz or • gunzip -c /<enter your directory>/ibm-java-sdk-6.0-7.0-linux-s390x.tgz | tar -xvf - > javaunpack.txt • Java 6 can/will then be installed

Software Download Notes • A complete list of supported configurations can be found at: • http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13196_01/platform/suppconfigs/index.html • Release Notes Middleware 11gR1 for IBM: Linux on System z (WLS 10.3.2) are accessible: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E15523_01/doc.1111/e15731/toc.htm • Verify you have adequate “tmp” space when you unzip • You will notice WebLogic is referred to as Oracle WebLogic Server 11gR1 (10.3.2) and "Oracle WebLogic Server 11g". • You download from OTN the "generic" package installer. It is not specific to Linux on z. • The IBM Java SDK 6 64-bit SR4 (or higher) is required. At this time we recommend you stay with SR4" • At this time the download is only on OTN - it is not yet on edelivery.oracle.com even though the release notes point to that url (as of 4/2010).

WebLogic Terminology & Definitions • WebLogic Domain • A WebLogic Server administration domain is a logically related group of WebLogic Server resources. • Domains include a special WebLogic Server instance called the Administration Server, and you configure a domain to include additional WebLogic Server instances called Managed Servers. • Administrative Server • One instance of WebLogic Server in each domain acts as an Administration Server. The Administration Server provides a central point for managing a WebLogic Server domain. • Managed Server • All other WebLogic Server instances in a domain are called Managed Servers. • In a domain with only a single WebLogic Server instance, that server functions both as Administration Server and Managed Server. • Node Manager • Utility which allows lifecycle control of an Administration Server and Managed Server instances from a remote location. A Node Manager process is associated with a specific machine.

  19. WebLogic Installation – Step 4 • Start an X-Term SERVER session using a PUTTY session • VNCSERVER is designated by a session instance # • Start an X-Term CLIENT session

  20. WebLogic Installation – Step 4.1 • Use Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) to install WebLogic • ./java -Djava.io.tmpdir=/dev -jar /wlogic/tmp/wls1032_generic.jar

WebLogic Installation – Step 4.1-continued • A series of install panels will display, complete entries and click Next.Below are key panels to note: • Verify/Enter the “Middleware Home Directory”. • Select “Custom” install WebLogic Server type. This will allow you to view specific components to be installed. • Make sure the “Server Examples” component is checked. • Select the local IBM JDK to be used. • Specify the WLS directory for the install within the Middleware directory. • “Installation Summary” panel is displayed, click “Next” to start the Install.

  23. WebLogic “Quick Start” – Step 4.2 • Once the Installation Complete, the previous OUI screen graphic will disappear for several seconds (see below) and only the VNC screen will remain. Eventually the OUI “QuickStart” panel will appear.

  24. WebLogic “Quick Start” – Step 4.2-continued • The “Getting Started with WebLogic Server 10.3.2” button is highlighted. Clicking on this button will start the WLS “Configuration Wizard”. • Our first configuration step will be to Create a WLS Domain.

Below is a brief list of some of the parameters to be specified: • Specify the WLS domain name and location. The domain will be located in the weblogic directory underuser_projects • WLS “Administrator” userid and password • WLS domain start mode (Dev or Prod) and verify JDK used, IBM Java 6 • You can optionally “Select modify settings for” • “Administration Server” • Enter Administration Server name and Listener address and Port (Default: 7001) • “Manager Servers, Cluster and Machines” • “RDBMS Security Store”

WebLogic Sample Application: AviTek – MedRec • OOTB uses PointBase DBMS • Not supported for enterprise-quality deployment • Evaluation license of PointBase has a database size limit of 30 MB • PointBase server is started automatically when you start WebLogic Server • To access MedRec application, issue "startWebLogic.sh" script • MedRec can be configured to use DB2 or Oracle or most any database that has JDBC support.
