  4. Web & Application Servers Minimum Software Requirements • 64-bit edition of Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (SP1) Standard, Enterprise, Data Center, or Web Server Preparation tool installs the following prerequisites:

Install The Bits – Follow the Basic Steps • Plan and Prepare; Verify hardware and software requirements • Install the required software updates on all farm servers • Install the SharePoint 2013prerequisites on servers in the application and Web tiers • Install SharePoint 2013on the application server and the Web servers • Create and configure the SharePoint farm • Provision service applications as needed • Complete post-deployment tasks as required

Prepare the Servers • SharePoint Preparation Tool • Checks for presence of prerequisites • Installs and configures required packages • Requires internet connection to pull down missing prerequisites • Can be run w/o internet connection to check for missing prerequisites • Public Updates and Hotfix Packages • Update WFE & App servers as appropriate • Ensure SQL Updates installed • Ensure all SharePoint servers are at the same patch level

Running the Preparation Tool • Run on Web and Application servers • Ensure you are logged on as local admin • If running from bits on a file system, locate and run prerequisiteinstaller.exe from the SharePoint 15 bits folder • Otherwise, if you install from bootable image click Install software prerequisites • Click Next • May require server reboot – however preparation tool will continue to run after restart • Click Finish on the Installation Complete page

Installing SharePoint 15 • Login as local administrator • Installation steps similar to SharePoint 2010 • Install on all SharePoint WFE & Application servers • Run Configuration Wizard when setup is finished on all servers • Configure diagnostic logging/usage health data/etc. • Create Web apps, site collections/sites, as planned

How we install 2013 at Micron • SharePoint 2013, Server 2008 R2 SP1, SQL 2012 sp1 • The install is the easy part. • Configuration can be time consuming • Install options • Manual • Time consuming when working with large farms. • Scripted • Repeatable • Initial script creation can be time consuming.

We use scripted installation • The installation and most of the configuration is automated using PowerShell scripts based on AutoSpInstaller • We use Autospinstallergui to edit the xml input file • http://autospinstaller.codeplex.com/ • Benefits • Granular SQL server assignment and aliasing for (almost) every service/web app • Centralized, remote installation to all farm servers • XML input file
