  2. In the Beginning… GridPP27

  3. International Context GridPP27

  4. LCG Start UK funded LCG posts at CERN • The UK, with funding via GridPP, played a pivotal role in initiating the Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (LCG) project by funding 23 posts at CERN for 3 years. GridPP27

  5. GridPP2 GridPP27

  6. Circa 2006 GridPP27

  7. Circa 2011 OtherVO’s LHC VO’s GridPP wLCG UK EGI EMI ARC ARC Worldwide: 277,000 CPUs; 140PB of disk ARC GridPP27

  8. Why? (rhetorical) 1-Week GridPP27

  9. LHC VO resources GridPP27

  10. Pledges Pledges to wLCG for April 2012 are due by the end of the month. In principle we try to pledge the UK-share (~author-fraction) of the global resource requirements as approved by the RRB. We have checked that this can be met by the Tier-2s for 2012 using existing hardware: 36% of existing (REBUS) CPU and 78% of existing disk. wLCG Pledges are done at the Tier-2 level to each of the LHC experiments (i.e. not at the site level). Not to be confused with the INTERNAL GridPP MOU, which does specify at the site level what resources are expected in return for Tier-2 HW funding. Nota Bene: Pledges have been circulated and discussed; now regarded as ~final. I will enter them into REBUS next week (no need for Tier-2s to do anything). GridPP27

  11. Tier-2 Accounting GridPP27

  12. GridPP4 HW Money Accounting period ends on October 30th and will determine the split of about £1m between institutes. Note earlier statement that 2012 pledge to wLCG will be covered by 36% of existing CPU and 78% of existing disk. But note that there will be no more HW money available until 2013 or possibly 2014. Funding profile is constrained and is not ideal. Grants will be decided and issued as quickly as possible after October-30th; Institutes must be ready to procure as money must be spent by 31/March/2012. DB/SL to circulate planned-to-be pledged numbers for 2013 and best guess for 2014 to help sites plan. GridPP27

  13. Next GridPP4 Grants • Funding is approved. • Need to review manpower distribution as required by the CB. • Second tranche grants need to start 1/Apr/2013 • However, pressure from (some) institutes to submit JeS sooner rather than later. • First tranche grants should be be extended by 6-months to allow flexibility. • Plan to converge by end of the year. 15. Summary • GridPPis part of a Global endeavor. This can add complexity and inertia but it can also empower and support. • This week is an opportunity for all us to think about how our part of the project fits into this international context and to perhaps ask questions or establish contacts that will help in the future.
