  1. Daily TAKS Connection:Interactions Among Organisms Objective 3 BIO (12): The student knows that interdependence and interactions occur within an ecosystem. The student is expected to: (B) interpret interactions among organisms exhibiting predation, parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism

Construct a four door, shutter fold foldable Materials: Foldable handout Scissors Pen Colored pencils/crayons Instructions: Fold the paper along the solid fold lines (front side facing you) Cut the paper along the dashed lines Record your name, date and period on the reverse Color the 4 terms (predation, parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism) each a different color Foldable Instructions

Notes Record the notes from under the appropriate door on your foldable • Mutualism: A relationship in which both organisms benefit from the relationship. • Example: Clown Fish & Sea Anemone – the fish receives protection from enemies and the anemone receives scraps of leftover food from the fish • Commensalism: A relationship in which one organism benefits, and the other is neither helped nor harmed • Example: Egret & Rhino – the bird receives protection from predators by its proximity to the rhino and the rhino is neither helped nor harmed

Notes continued… • Parasitism: A relationship in which one organism, who lives on another, benefits, and the other organism is harmed. • Example: Fleas & Dog – the fleas gain nourishment from the dog and the dog itches from the bite • Predation: A relationship in which one organism benefits (the predator) and the other organism is killed/consumed (the prey) • Example: Lion & Zebra/Rabbit & Lettuce – the lion eats the zebra; the rabbit eats the lettuce
