COST BURDEN FOR TYPE 2 DIABETES • Diagnosed Type 2 diabetes is estimated at $3 billion a year • Average cost to community per person $5,360 +$5,540 in benefits = $10,900 • Cost per person increases with onset of complications = $15,580 Note: These costs do not include lost productivity from days lost through illness and premature death. HEALTH CARE IN AUSTRALIA Budget 2010...What is the Australian government doing for Diabetes? • $449.2 million to deliver coordinated primary health care for PWD • $772 million to strengthen access to primary care services, including around 23 new GP Super Clinics and improved access to GP after hours services. • Training for health professionals in CDSM sessions/activities will commence in 2010-11 and 42 healthy lifestyle workers will be recruited and trained. • This new workforce will work with individuals, families and communities in an initial 20 regions across Australia. • CDM plan • 5th community pharmacy agreement $15.4 billion • Ongoing support of NDSS • National Preventive HealthStrategy....the healthiest country by 2020 • ABHI – joint venture $250 mil over 4 yrs for CDM & prevention Budget 2010
