  2. Hearing  Biological process of taking in sound.  Involuntary.  Can’t turn it off.

  3. Listening  Voluntary  Requires Effort  Hearing Plus: - Using - Reception - Attention - Responding - Remembering -Understanding

  4. Listening • Least worked-on skill • Speak 120-180 words/minute, but we hear and process much faster. • We take breaks (daydream) while people speak because of the extra time. • Avg. person spends 30% of his/her waking hours in conversation. • Attention Span- in one’s short-term memory, lasts for only 45 seconds.

  5. 4 Ways to Listen  Appreciative Listening  Discriminative Listening  Empathic Listening  Critical Listening

  6. Appreciative Listening -For pleasure or enjoyment. -Concerts, iPods/mp3 players, & radio.

  7. Discriminative Listening -Singling out for a purpose or for information or message. -Lecture notes for key ideas for a test.

  8. Empathic Listening -For understanding and to give encouragement or advice. -Between friends, counselors, & therapists.

  9. Critical Listening -To evaluate messages for value, worth, & meaning. -Daily Announcements/NCTV. *When we are listening for personal meaning, we are critically listening.

  10. Critical Listening *You should be able to separate facts from opinions *identifyreliable/trustworthy information, & *know when propaganda is being used to sway you.

  11. 7 Roadblocks to Good Listening  Tuning out dull topics-MEGO  Faking attention  Yielding to distractions  Criticizing delivery/appearance  Jumping to conclusions  Over-reacting to word choice  Interrupting

  12. Bettering Your Listening Skills  Be open to information/messages  Pay attention to body language  Paraphrase/summarize • Ask for explanations/ask questions for clarity • Write down what you hear--note- taking. • Empathize --put self in speaker’s position.

  13. Bettering Your Listening Skills Use Your EARS • Explore - ask questions for more information. • Analyze - consider info from different perspectives. • Review - mentally go through what is being said & summarize. • Search - search for hidden meaning in word choice & body language.

  14. Gender Differences • 96% of interruptions between males & females come from males . • Men tend to listen long enough to answer their question & then report their ideas (report talk). • Women tend to listen for commonalities between self & others (rapport talk).. • Men tend to use direct eye contact to show they are listening.  Women tend to use “cooperative overlaps” to show they are listening.
