  2. Background (1571-1630) • Born in Weil Der Stadt in Swabia (Southwest Germany) • Educated at the protestant University of Tűbingen • Studied theory • Mathematics Teacher was Michael Maestlin(1550-1635) • Maestlin one of the first astronomers to subscribe to Copernicus’s heliocentric model

Background Cont. • After graduating Kepler became a mathematician in 1594 • In 1597 Kepler published his first major work, The Cosmographic mystery • the distances of the planets from the Sun in the Copernican system were determined by the five regular solids, if one supposed that a planet's orbit was circumscribed about one solid and inscribed in another.

  5. Impact in Astronomy • Keplerpublished stars and planets in his books that helped navigators travel more efficiently • He contributed in mathematics and improved optics

  6. ` Kepler’s first Law: The orbit of a planet about the Sun is an ellipse with the Sun’s center of mass at one focus.

  7. Kepler’s second Law: A line joining a planet and the Sun sweeps out equal areas in equal intervals of time.

  8. Kepler’s third Law: The squares of the periods of the planets are proportional to the cubes of their semi-major axes.
