By the end of the course, students will have a strong understanding of metal processing principles and the ability to optimize processing variables to achieve defect-free materials.

Course Description and Objectivessee the Syllabus for more details Course Description (from Catalog): Fundamental concepts of solidification and their application to foundry and welding practices; metal forming concepts applied to forging, rolling, extrusion, drawing, and sheet forming operations; machining mechanisms and methods; powder metallurgy; advanced processing methods including rapid solidification and mechanical alloying. Course Objectives: By the end of the course, you should be able to do the following things: • Understand the physical principles related to the processing of metallic materials such as solidification theory, metal forming theory, theory of chip formation in machining, etc. • Be familiar with the common metal processing technologies both from classroom study and from field trips. • Be able to optimize the design of processing variables to obtain sound material free from defects. 2

Only 1 makeup test permitted • Class Resources • Available at http://www.mse.ncsu.edu/zhu/ • Attendance (on campus students) • Attendance expected (0.2% penalty for missing a quiz) 4

Testing and Grading • Where are testing problems from? • Underlined contents in the slides • Homework assignments • Quizzes/class discussions • 440, 540-001 and 540-601 will be graded separately • 540 will have more challenging testing problems • Test 1 30% • Test 2 30% • Final 40% (The final is comprehensive) No grade markup no matter how close Targeted grade distribution: A: 15-25%, B: 30-40% 5

Teaching style • Active student participation in class • A dice will be rolled to determine who participates • 0.2% will be deducted if you are not present in the class to answer a quiz; • 0.2% extra credit will be given if you give the right answer • 0.2% extra credit will be given to a volunteer who gives the right answer • No credit will be given or deducted if you give a wrong answer for regular quizzes. 6

  7. Reading assignments • Questions may be asked to check if you have finished the assignment • Extra credit for those who give right answer • A student will be chosen randomly using dice 7

  8. Field Trips Three field trips are planned, depending on arrangements with metal processing companies. Field trips typically occur on Fridays and are required for on-campus students. Each field trip will result in 0.5% credit for participants See the class website for the dress code for field trips. 8
