 — John F. Kennedy Why, as a Fraternity, are we slipping into the darkness of obscurity? Why are we not just fading away, but actually disappearing in an ever increasing rate? The problem is not Masonry. The problem is not our beliefs or our ideals. The problem is one of leadership. Let’s take a look at "Masonic leadership." The major qualification for being a leader in our Fraternity is time. If you can devote the time, you can get to the top. The Masonic leadership message is clear: Behave yourself and put in the time. Do as you are told and keep your mouth shut. Don’t come up with new ideas, we don’t want new ideas. Anyone who tries to be different by being innovative or creative will have his wings clipped quickly by a group of men with the term "Past" after their names. Over and over again it happens and nothing changes because nothing can change. This is our problem. There is a significant difference between leadership and management, they are not interchangeable. The leader inspires, the manager manages. Leaders are concerned with people, managers with form and structure. We are experts in getting meeting notices out on time. We meet every deadline. We are experts in making reports. Our reports are always in proper form. We’re experts in holding ceremonies. We practice and practice. We’re experts at putting men on committees. Take a look at the roster on any Masonic organization and you’d think that with so many men involved, mountains could be moved. What are you? Are you a leader or are you a manager? Do you inspire or do you maintain? Do you challenge the status quo or do you accept it? As Worshipful Master, have you caused others to want to do what you think is necessary for the survival of Freemasonry. If I asked you to identify the greatest leaders of our times, what names would you come up with. John F. Kennedy once said that there are risks and there are costs in a program of action, but there are far less than the long range risks and costs of a program of inaction. Great leaders cause things to happen, they don’t wait for things to happen. Masonic leadership means a willingness to take bold steps. Leadership means being able to move men’s hearts, to make them proud of their Masonic membership. Leadership means being able to motivate men to action. A dynamic Lodge has effective leaders. The Worshipful Master and Lodge Officers need to encourage and help develop the leadership abilities in the younger Masonic Brothers. We need to encourage and demonstrate to our Masonic Brothers that they are part of the process, that they are part of the organization, that they count, that they are appreciated. Great leaders do not go where there is a path and lead. They go where there is no path and leave a trail. We need men who are willing to be daring and make a difference.
