    3. What is Soldering? Soldering is a process in which two or more metal items are joined together by melting and flowing a filler metal into the joint, the filler metal (solder) having a relatively low melting point.1 Solder is a nonferrous, fusible metallic alloy used to join metallic surfaces.2 Typically the solder we use is made out of 63% Tin and 37% Lead.

Prepare your station before you start Clean your work area Dampen sponge of soldering iron with water Lay out all of tools you are going to use Lay out all of the parts you will need so that you can find them easily once you start soldering Lay out assembly instructions if you have any

Prepare Soldering Iron Choose the correct tip for the soldering iron and install it Turn on the soldering iron (Typically I set the temp to ~ 370°C - 400°C) Once the tip has warmed up, clean it on the damp sponge Tin the tip of the soldering Iron Prepare your PWB/parts before soldering Clean your PWB with ethyl alcohol, acid brushes and clean wipes If you are soldering wires, cut and strip them to the correct length per NASA-STD-8739.3 Clean the leads of the parts you are going to solder with ethyl alcohol and an acid brush Tin the leads of your parts / wires if necessary

How do I Solder? – Through Hole Bend the leads of the part if needed with an orange stick Insert the part in the PWB Trim the leads Solder the lead to PWB Position the soldering iron tip so you touch both the lead and the pad on PWB You might want to add flux to the area before you start depending on the part Apply solder to the joint (not to the soldering iron tip) in order to create a thermal bridge to allow the solder to start flowing Touch the solder to the end of the cut lead Add solder as needed to complete the soldered connection Remove the solder Remover the soldering iron Clean the solder joint with ethyl alcohol and an acid brush Inspect the solder joint Rework if necessary

How do I Solder? – Surface Mount Bend the leads if necessary Tin the leads if possible Clean the leads Place the part in the correct orientation with tweezers Touch the soldering iron tip to one lead to tack the solder and hold the part in place Solder the remaining leads Alternate between sides in a cross pattern and allow enough time for part to cool down in between soldering leads Be careful not to create a bridge between leads Go back and solder the first lead Clean the part Inspect the part Rework if necessary

    12. How do I Solder? Finishing Up Clean your PWB and soldered parts with an acid brush, ethyl alcohol, and clean wipes Clean the tip of your soldering iron in the damp sponge Tin the tip of the soldering iron Turn-off soldering iron Clean your station

Prepare your work area Prepare your soldering iron Add Flux to the solder joint that is going to be desoldered Use solder wick / desoldering pump and soldering iron to remove solder Remove solder wick Remove soldering iron Clean your PWB with ethyl alcohol, acid brush, and clean wipes

    14. Tips & Tricks You do not become an expert overnight Practice, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!!!! When soldering make sure you choose the right tip and temperature Soldering under the microscope is very helpful for surface mount parts When desoldering sometimes it helps to add more solder to your solder joint
