  1. PAPER STACKING DEVICE TEAM 8 Abstract Our team was given the task of improving a Xerox Copier with designing a device that detects the paper stack’s quality. Our device needs to be able to detect the difference between a proper stack and an improper stack. Furthermore, the printer must be designed to ward off the inevitable “paper jam”, and provide an all around effortless experience. To begin this process we performed a customer needs assessment to find what people want in a paper stacking device for a copier. Through online research of customer reviews and also surveying our peers we were able to configure the customer needs found in this report. We researched various patents to provide inspiration for our final design. BENCHMARKING HOW IT WORKS In our final design the tray is exactly 8.5 inches wide to ensure stack uniformity and the walls can fold down so the stack can easily be removed once finished. The rollers attach to a hinged tray from the printer and move upward as the stack increases in height. An infrared beam is projected across the tray and when it is broken by the paper stack it moves upward and forces the rollers to move up with it. The infrared beam can also detect when the stack is complete. We also created a separate offset device which can be replaced with the rear tray wall so the customer has the offset paper stack option. Specifically, the printer is supposed to allow for paper stacking, as well as an immunity to the dreaded paper jam. Through literature reviews, patent searches, and customer needs assessments, our team feels confident that we have accomplished all of these said tasks and goals. This product will be successful on the market, and above all, a consistent, reliable, and even sexier product than ever before. OFFSET DEVICE
