  1. Identifying Trends The what, how and why of

  2. What are trends? • Trends are patterns or the general course. • Anytime you are looking for patterns-you are looking for trends. • Why do you think identifying trends would be helpful? Scientists analyze trends to make predictions or make decisions.

  3. How? • Patterns among numbers or quantitative data • Ex. Make a prediction- 2, 4, 6, 8… what number comes next? • Patterns among qualitative data • Ex. Light, dark, light, dark…what comes next?

  4. What if…? • What if someone offered you a spinach enchilada? Do you decide to try it or not? • What if you go to a new pizza restaurant, but don’t recognize any of the types of pizza? How do you choose what to order? • Do you like spinach? Do you like enchiladas? Based on this trend of past likes/dislikes, do you think you would like a spinach enchilada? • Study the ingredients list. Do you recognize anything you like?

  7. In Your Own Words… • What is a trend in your own words? • What is a prediction in your own words? • Why do scientists use these two things? Why are they important?

  8. Your Turn… • What trends can you find? • In small groups, analyze the following graphs for trends. • You will present your findings and explain why you felt this was the trend. Be prepared to be asked questions. • You may work in your table groups but every group member must participate in the discussion. • Each group member must show 2 of the examples in his/her spiral. (there are 5 total)

  14. Make a Prediction • If the plant experiment were continued for two more weeks, what is the best prediction for the height of the control plant at the end of the experiment?

  16. Make a Prediction • If the trend continues, what is the best prediction for the height of the plant with the woodchip mulch in week 5?

  17. Identify the Trend(s) • Look at your class graph for the Cardiovascular/Respiratory Systems Unit. • What trends do you notice? • Can you make any predictions if the trend continued?
