  1. What is Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl?

  2. What is the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl? • Mrs. Helen Ruffin created the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl to be a reading competition in game format. She wanted to have teams of students from different schools compete to test their knowledge of the selected books. • The Reading Bowl takes place in Cobb County each year, in late January/early February. Competitors read the chapter book nominees for the Georgia Book Award. Students compete on factual knowledge of these books.

What is the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl? • The winners of the Cobb County Reading Bowl will proceed to the regional Reading Bowl competition. • The Georgia Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl is open to students in grades four through 12 across the state. The competition is all about recognizing readers and sharing the love of reading. • Each school can send a team of 10 students to compete in the Reading Bowl.

  12. Proctors ask questions about the books you’ve read

  13. Students compete against each other for the most points

  14. The teams with the most points win an award!

Preparing for the Bowl • Reading Bowl Team meets every other week (Tuesday mornings, Wednesday afternoons). • Check out one of the books nominated for the Georgia Book Award from the cart by writing your name and the book number on the correct page. http://www.dekalb.k12.ga.us/hrrb/elementarybooklist.html

  16. Preparing for the Bowl • Read as many of the books as you can! • Write questions about the books as you read • Place your questions in the box for that book. • If possible ask your parent to help you type the questions and email them to paulahunt93@gmail.com

  17. Preparing for the Bowl • Conduct practice rounds with your teammates • If more than 10 students wish to participate we will hold a School Bowl to determine who will go to the County Bowl. • The School Team will also be based on number of books read, questions made, and past participation.

  18. Meetings! Attend either the Tuesday morning or Wednesday afternoon meetings below. • Tuesday, October 15th 7:20 or Wednesday, October 16th 2:30 • Tuesday, November 5th 7:20 or Wednesday, November 6th  2:30 • Tuesday, November 19th 7:20 or Wednesday, November 20th  2:30 • Tuesday, December 3rd 7:20 or Wednesday, December 4th  2:30 • Tuesday, December 17th 7:20 or Wednesday, December 18th 2:30
