  4. DEFINING WHO ARESOCIAL ENTREPRENEURS The great debate Social entrepreneurs adopt a mission to create and sustain social value. They pursue opportunities to serve this mission, while continuously adapting and learning. Wikipedia “A social enterprise is a business that trades for a social and/or environmental purpose.   8. #4socents 8 Backing social entrepreneurs OUR WORK • We back around 1000 people each year to start their own ventures for social or environmental benefit, with a mix of cash, development support and networking. • We then support around 50 per year to get to scale, with more intensive support.

  16. #4socents 16 Scaling up and investment readiness OUR INCUBATORS Big Venture Challenge: Cohorts of 10 high potential social entrepreneurs, intensive support plus patient loan funds to match external “angel” investors Wayra UnLtd: A partnership between UnLtd and the Telefonica Wayra network to create an intensive incubator platform for early stage, high potential digital and mobile tech social ventures

  17. #4socents 17 What social entrepreneurs achieve Sustainability? • Across our portfolio: • High survival rates, 70% after 3 years • Many stay small and local, some grow to scale • Our survey of 1014 Award Winners showed: • 43% employed at least one person – average across sample 3 employees • 95% created positive social capital • Three quarters offered volunteering opportunities • 60% were supporting other social entrepreneurs 1.2m Total number of beneficiaries reached by survey respondents in a year

  18. #4socents 18 Supporting other agencies in the model ECOSYSTEM Higher and further education: Supporting 56 universities and 7 (soon to be 40) further education colleges, to develop their own start up social entrepreneur programmes Disadvantaged communities: Working with the Big Local Trust to build capacity in 150 of the most disadvantaged communities in England, over a 10 year period. UnLtd supports social entrepreneurs in these areas, and works with local organisations to help them start their own programmes of support. Spark: Already 60% of social entrepreneurs support others, and 20% provide more intensive support eg resource raising. The Santander Spark programme is testing out how we can help more people to deliver better quality support in this viral, peer to peer approach. Navigation and data commons: As the ecosystem of support develops, these become ever more important factors. UnLtd is leading a consortium of 42 support agencies in the UK to map the sector and develop common metrics.

GSEN : Main objectives Mission • Enable support organisations around the world to become increasingly sustainable and effective in helping more social entrepreneurs start and thrive Main objectives • Enable organisations willing to support social entrepreneurs, especially early stage ones, to start-up and grow • Build a strong network where individual support organisations get together for shared learning and development • Connect the resources to foster a better support ecosystem for social entrepreneurs, especially those at early stages • Create a credible collective voice to raise awareness and build momentum around social entrepreneurship internationally What the GSEN really wants to achieve
