  2. Piecing It All Together What is Service-Learning? “…a teaching and learning approach that integrates community service with academic standards to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.” *National Commission on Service Learning*

  3. Piecing It All Together What can service-learning do? focuson the real-life needs of thecommunity foster civic responsibility provide an authentic learning experience build knowledge and character

  4. Piecing It All Together What can service-learning do? offer a structured time for reflection Promote an understanding of diversity Give youth voice Present partnerships that are collaborative, beneficial, and address community needs

  5. Piecing It All Together What is “meaningful” service-learning and how do we make it “meaningful”?

Piecing It All Together According to Learn and Serve America’s National Service-Learning Clearinghouse: “It actively engages participants in meaningful and personally relevant service activities. Indicators are: 1. Service-learning experiences are appropriate to participant ages and developmental abilities. 2. Service-learning addresses issues that are personally relevant to the participants. 3. Service-learning provides participants with interesting and engaging service activities.

  7. According to Learn and Serve America’s National Service-Learning Clearinghouse: “It actively engages participants in meaningful and personally relevant service activities. Indicators are: 4. Service-learning encourages participants to understand their service experiences in the context of the underlying societal issues being addressed. 5. Service-learning leads to attainable and visible outcomes that are valued by those being served.”

  8. Piecing It All Together Which of these are meaningful service projects? 1. 10th graders counting change for the Veteran’s Day penny drive NO 2. US history students conducting interviews to collect, record, and preserve oral histories from elders in their community YES 3. A 7th grade global studies class going to work at the local community garden that grows for food for a local food bank. Maybe 4. Elementary students sponsoring a sled dog team at the Iditarod. NO

Middle school students developing and maintaining relationships through letter writing with community members in a local assisted living facility. YES 6. Senior citizens coming into class to read to 2nd graders. MAYBE 7. 8th grade art classes studying, creating and selling ceramic bowls to ear money to be donated to a disaster relief organization. YES 8. Student council led school-wide can drive before Christmas. NO

  12. Piecing It All Together There are six parts to any service-learning project: Issue/Need Participants Curriculum/Academic Component Service-Learning Facilitator Community Partner Funding
