Timelines and Chronologies • Timelines help historians to understand the past because: • Timelines show us the order of events • Timelines show us how much time happens between the events we study • Timelines are a visual way of learning about the past • Timelines help us to organise and arrange the past into different periods

  3. Arrange the following events into an accurate and informative timeline (you may include additional events if you wish)

Your Timeline • You must include the above events – you can include others (I would encourage you to do more) • Your timeline can be produced how you like, on powerpoint, on paper, as a washing line with events attached…use your imagination….! • Write a short paragraph describing what happened for each event. • DO NOT copy and paste great chunks of writing from the internet. This is very obvious and will NOT gain you any credit. Instead write the information in your words as you understand it. • DO NOT copy and hand in a timeline from the internet, this is also obvious. • Pictures and colour are always good!

  6. 1381 – The Peasants’ Revolt, led by Wat Tyler, ends in bloodshed as the peasants seek fairer treatment 1170 – Archbishop Thomas Becket is murdered in Canterbury cathedral on the orders of Henry II 1096 – Pope Urban II launches the First Crusade to recapture Jerusalem from the Muslims 11th Century 12th Century 13th Century 14th Century 15th Century 1000 1100 1200 1300 1400 1500 1066 – Duke William of Normandy defeats King Harold II at the Battle of Hastings 1348 – The Black Death arrives in England, spread by black rats, and kills up to half of the population The Middle Ages

  7. Timelines are usually straight vertical or horizontal lines but they don’t have to be. You can be more creative if you wish, but don’t make it too difficult..!

  8. Students work will be evaluated on the following criteria. • Quality of Information produced – and written in their own words. • How good is it, as a timeline of the period? • Presentation • Effort put into the task.
