  2. Implementation is Scheduled for a Fall 2010 Start

  3. Signature Courses (6 Courses) • Jesuit Tradition Common Core • Philosophy: Moral Foundations • This course is being tweaked and will be ready for Fall 2010 • Theology: Faith, Justice and the Catholic Tradition • This is a replacement course which the Theology Department expects to be ready for Fall 2010

  4. Signature Courses (6 Courses) • Cultural Legacy Common Core • English: Texts and Contexts • No changes required. • History: Forging the Modern World • This is a replacement course which the History Department expects to be ready for Fall 2010

  5. Signature Courses (6 Courses) • Signature Variable Course • First Year Seminar • Major issue of course development • Faith and Reason Course • There are a number of open questions about this course which the committee will be addressing: • Not restricted to Philosophy or Theology • Should a committee be assigned to review courses in this category. • Not needed until 2011

  6. Variable Courses (6-9 Courses) • Fine Arts or Literature • No issues for implementation • Mathematics (Beauty) • The Mathematics Department reports that it will have courses in place for the Fall 2010 start. • Natural Sciences (One 4-Credit Course with Lab) • Courses are being developed to meet this major change. • Grants are being written to connect with Education Department Requirements • Depending upon funding and lab resource requirements there is optimism that these requirements can be met within the implementation schedule.

  7. Variable Courses (6-9 Courses) • Non-Native Language (0-2 Courses) • Requires major course content changes (3 courses -> 2 courses) • Social/Behavior Science • No issues with this category • Philosophy (Philosophical Anthropology) • This course is on target for implementation schedule • Theology (Religious Difference) • Theology Department is identifying existing courses that will satisfy the religious difference category. • Writing (0-1 Course) • Craft of Language course will satisfy this requirement

  8. Integrative Learning (3 Courses) • The remaining three courses in the GEP will be chosen by the major departments for students in that major. These courses must be College of Arts and Sciences courses outside of the major department and may be specified broadly or narrowly. The purpose of this requirement is to foster integration of the major with general education. • Requires Departmental Coordination • Significant Resourcing Issues

  9. Recommendation on Assessment • Upon the adoption of the new curriculum, a university-wide task force should be formed to develop and coordinate an ongoing comprehensive assessment program of it. Additionally, the task force should plan and conduct a thorough review of the new curriculum at the end of one full cycle of operation (i.e., 4 year period). • Requires University Level Committee • Curriculum Implementation Task Force

Recommendation on Implementation • University-wide committees, consisting of equal numbers of faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences and the Haub School of Business, should be established to certify courses which will satisfy the (1) first year seminar, (2) diversity, (3) globalization, (4) non-Western area studies, (5) writing-intensive and (6) ethics-intensive courses, respectively. [Plus (7) Faith and Reason course] • Replaces the GER Committee • Requires MULTIPLE Committees • Establish Policies and Processes • First year (3 + 3 with CITF ex officio) • Second year (2 + 2 with CITF ex officio)

  11. Immediate Needs • We are in short supply of proposals for the FRESHMAN Seminar. • Provost will extend the schedule for submission. • Critical for Fall 2010 implementation • Departmental Integrative Learning Requirements • By May 1, Departments should begin (if they haven’t already, discussions with their ILC departments • By June 15 all Departments should submit the formal list of ILC requirements to the Curriculum Implementation Task Force • GEP Committees • By NEXT College Council meeting, each Council shall submit to the CITF, three nominees (volunteers) for EACH of the seven GEP committees on the previous slide (overlap is OK).
