  2. Traditional Needs Assessment • Focuses on what is wrong or missing • Communities are defined by problems and deficiencies Teen pregnancy, depression, alcoholism, diabetes, child abuse, poverty…. Wow, things are really bad for you!

  3. That is terrible! The situation is hopeless! Whatever will we do?

  4. Lucky for you that I am here! I can help you with all of your awful problems!

  5. We know what you need because we are smarter and better than you! Here is some money. Do some Sudoku and go buy some salad! Then you will get better!

  6. Are you doing what we told you to? You know your real problem is that you are not more like us. You really are a bunch of losers! I honestly don’t know if even we can help you, as amazing and powerful as we are!

  7. ABCD: Asset-based community development Focuses on what is actually there Can you see the assets in this picture?

  8. Don’t cry. I am not really Superman. I’m just a baby like you, wearing a Superman costume my mom bought online.

  9. And we are not really rich geniuses. We are actually a bunch of out-of-work actors getting paid $25 to pose for this photo. And I am not really here. I am a photo-shop image.

  10. Assets • Types of assets and some examples: • Individuals: experience, gifts, abilities, desires, hopes, dreams • Associations: clubs, faith-based groups, sports teams, ASPCA • Institutions: schools, police force, fire squad, local government, health departments • Physical resources: land, buildings, infrastructure • Economic resources: businesses, state health insurance, grant funds, informal economic exchanges This guy knows how to fly a helicopter and he makes a killer Bun Nuoc Leo. He also takes care of his aging diabetic aunt.

  11. Asset mapping • The basis for sustainable community development • Inventories capacities of individuals, associations, institutions, and physical and economic assets • Special focus is on marginalized groups: older adults, minorities, disabled, ex-offenders…

  12. Latinos in Appalachia community asset Map Project • Latinos are the fastest-growing minority group in the U.S. • The Latino population of Virginia has nearly doubled in the last 10 years--nearly 10 times the rate of increase for all other groups combined, and more than double the increase for the nation at large • There were an estimated 3,324 Latino residents in the NRV in 2009 • We may tend to think of them as “service recipients”-- but this is a dynamic and promising population with lots to offer!
