  1. Burnham Alpine Boilers

  2. Introducing… Modulating, Condensing High Efficiency Gas Boiler

  3. What is the Alpine™? • Burnham’s newest Mod/Con • boiler product • 95% AFUE • Stainless steel heat exchanger • 6 sizes: 80-399 MBH • (residential and commercial) • 500 MBH coming Fall ’08 • Industry-leading safety features • Installation and service-friendly • design

  4. What is the Alpine? • Quality design & components • Solid construction, simple lay-out • Service-friendly package • Exceptional safety features

  5. Alpine Input & Output Ratings

  6. Alpine™ Key Product Features • Competitive pricing • Modern, appliance-like design • Slide-out control panel • Stackable cabinet • Gas, water, & electric connections • on left side • Polypropylene condensate trap with integral float switch

  7. Heat Exchangers • Made by Giannoni in France • ASME Approved at 160 psi and 210º F • 30 PSI PRV on 80-285 • 50 PSI PRV on 399

  8. Properties of Stainless Steel Heat Exchangers • Vessel is made of • 316L stainless coils • which resist corrosive • properties of • condensate • Resistant To Thermal Shock • Designed to Run at Extremely Low Temperatures

  9. Mono Heat Exchanger ALP080-ALP210

  10. Stainless Steel Pipe is Coiled Coils are then flattened and stacked

  11. Coils Are Welded Into Stainless Steel Headers • Supply/Return Header Has Baffle • Baffle Forces Water to Make 2 Passes Through Heat Exchanger

  12. 2-Pass Coiled Heat Exchanger Baffle Baffle forces water to make two passes through Heat X

  13. Flue Products Make 2 Passes Also

  14. Duo Heat Exchanger Used on 285 & 399 Models

  15. Duo Heat Exchanger (285 & 399) • Water makes 4 passes through heat exchanger • Flue products make 2 passes through heat exchanger

  16. Delta P’s of Heat X

  17. Delta P’s of Heat Exchanger

  18. Alpine Jacket Features

  19. Alpine Jacket Features • Controls in Upper Compartment • Protects electronics from combustion air • Corner Bracing on Jacket • Creates sturdy, solid unit • Negative Pressure Cabinet • Creates added level of safety • Alpine is a floor-mounted boiler

  20. Alpine Cabinet Features • Slide Out Control Drawer • Provides easy access to transformer and MCBA board • Control Panel Can Be Opened While Unit is in Operation • All Control Fault Codes Are Listed On Back Of Panel

  21. Flat Top Jacket Panel • Sealed Top Panel no knock-out’s or holes • This Protects The Controls From Spills and Leaks • Allows Units To Be Stacked

  22. Alpine Stacking Kit • Stacking Brackets are Standard On Every Alpine • This Allows Boilers To Be Stacked • Reduces Footprint • Increases Flexibility of Installation • No Extra Cost

  23. Built-In Handles • Allow Easy Handling and Stacking of Unit • Flush-Mounted to Sides of Cabinet

  24. Nylon Glides Allow Easy Maneuvering of Unit

  25. Control Features

  26. Honeywell MCBA Control • Microprocessor-based combustion control system • Controls boiler ignition • Modulates firing rate • Monitors supply, return, and flue gas temps • Can be adjusted from display or by laptop computer interface

  27. Honeywell MCBA Control Features • Built-In Outdoor Reset • DHW Priority • Built-In 0-10VDC Terminals (for external modulation) • Built-in diagnostics • Proven Design, Millions of Installations Worldwide

  28. MCBA Control Features • Fan Post-Purge Clears Heat Exchanger of Flue Products • This Protects the Fan & Burner From Corrosion • Fire Test Decal is Located Next to Control

  29. MCBA Control Features • MCBA is Self-Adapting: • If No DHW Sensor is Detected, Alpine Will Not Prioritize Hot Water Demand • If No Outdoor Sensor is Detected, Alpine Will Operate in Set point Mode

  30. Pre-mix Burner • Cylindrical pre-mix burner creates clean combustion and even heat distribution at all firing rates • Separate igniter and flame sense rod are used for durability • Refractory reflects heat back into heat exchanger

  31. Variable Speed Fan Fan speed can be adjusted between 1000 and 7000 RPM Internal circuitry converts 120VAC into 10VDC Fan speed controls fuel flow

  32. Negative Pressure Gas Valve • Made by Dungs • Mounts to fan housing • Air coupled to fan • Adjusts fuel flow according to fan pressure • Maintains linear air/fuel ratio for proper combustion • Converts to LP with simple adjustment

  33. Negative Pressure Gas Valve

  34. Fuel Conversion • All Alpine boilers are built as natural gas units • Must be converted to LP in field • No parts required for conversion • LP Fuel decals are included

  35. Fuel Conversion • Procedure is explained in IOM • Size specific decal goes next to rating plate • LP conversion label goes on exterior of unit

  36. 24-Volt Terminal Strip • Mounted In Front of boiler- easy access • Thermostat, Aquastat, O.D. Sensor, External Limit connections made here • Terminals for External Control – No AM4 Relay Required! • Installer Friendly

  37. Line Voltage Connections • Wiring connections made in J-Box • Boiler Pump: • Red wire = pump hot • DHW Pump • Blue wire = pump hot • Both pumps share neutral (L2) • Use Relay For Pumps Over 2Amps

  38. Temperature Sensors • Return Water • Supply Water • High Limit • Stack Temperature • Redundancy = safety

  39. Differential Pressure Switch • Ensures proper air flow though fireside of boiler • Shuts Down Boiler in the event of a blocked vent or air intake • Helps to prevent fouling of heat exchanger.

  40. Condensate Trap • Polypropylene Trap • Includes industry-exclusive Float Switch • Protects Heat X from condensate overflow • Patent Pending

  41. Simple Wiring • Wiring is simple & color-coded • Easy access to all connectors • Wires cross at 90º angles to minimize radio frequency interference

  42. Venting the Alpine

  43. Alpine will have two vent options… CPVC Adaptor Concentric Adaptor

  44. Much has happened in the CPVC project • #1 A major CPVC manufacturer has finally certified their product as a vent material. • #2 Burnham has completed testing with CPVC pipe on condensing boilers, and ETL has approved our application.

  45. CPVC/PVC Vent Pipe • Testing is complete and CPVC/PVC will be an standard on Alpine, optional on Freedom, & CHG • Burnham will supply a 30” starter length of CPVC & one CPVC 90° • Field supplied PVC can be used from there • Production will change later this fall.

  46. PVC Vent Kits Contents: 1- 30” length of CPVC 1- 90º elbow 1-Intake terminal (Tee) 1- Vent terminal (Tee) 2-Rodent Screens for Terminals Glue & Primer Kits with be shipped with all Alpine boilers

  47. PVC Vent Guidelines Max Length in equivalent feet for each run ie: 60 equivalent feet of intake & 60 equivalent feet vent length

  48. Max Vent Lengths 90º = 5 equivalent feet Terminals do not count towards vent length!

  49. Snorkel Approved with PVC Vent!
