  1. Supporting Ireland’s Indigenous Ocean Energy Sector County Mayor’s Conference March, 2011 Tom Kelly

  2. Harnessing Natural Resource Potential from offshore wind & wave– one of Europe’s richest resources Opportunity for X,000 jobs Building on Existing Capability Software, Electronics, Construction, Services & Engineering Developing New Capabilities O&M services R&D products – Control systems, Composite Materials, Electrical/Electronic, Software….. Ireland’s Opportunity

  3. Global Opportunity • Worldwide - offshore wind to grow p.a. by 92% to 79GW by 2015 • Europe - Potential to supply all of Europe’s Electricity needs 7 times over & Offshore to grow to 19GW by 2015 • US – Potential 1,000GW off Atlantic coast (Cape Wind farm approved- 420MW) • Asia – offshore wind to grow from 100MW to 10GW by 2015 The immediate opportunity….. • UK – offshore plans for Rounds 1,2& 3 is 47 GW, £96bn investment (Arklow Bank @ 25MW = 1,900 Arklow Bank Wind Farms) …Ireland – we have the best wind resource in Europe…

  4. Enterprise Ireland Support • Start-up Activity • Growing Companies • Direct Financial & Investor Support • Internationalisation • Management/Skills Development • R&D / Technology Development • Partnering/Collaborating – technology / business development

  5. What we are looking for… • Industry Relevant Research • Industry Driven Research • Industry Led Research

  6. Support for the Energy SectorResearch and Innovation • Commercialisation Fund • Academic proposals • Industry-Led Research: Projects / Programmes / Competence Centres • Industry proposals, research with academia • Commercialisation Development Managers • Commercialisation from Large Research Centres • Applied Research Enhancement • Research in Institutes of Technology (IOT) • Technology Transfer Offices • Strengthen Technology Transfer in Universities and IOTs • Innovation Vouchers • Small Industry • Innovation partnerships • Collaborative Research • R&D Fund • In company R&D support

  7. We want to see.. • Break-though products & processes for companies • Higher export levels, spin-offs, patents & licences • Increased company expenditure typically leveraging other funding streams on more relevant R&D • Increased company involvement, two-way transfer of knowledge between markets and research community, trained researchers transferring to industry with improved skills and networks.

  8. Marine Renewables Activity • Early Stage Research –Proof of Concept • Device Developers • OpenHydro, Aquamarine Power, Wavebob, Ocean Energy, Seapower, Cyan, CETO, JOSPA, etc. • Supply Chain • Lotus, Sisk, Fehily Timoney, Arup, Techworks, Mainport / Lotus / Jennings / O’Brien etc • Trade Missions / Study Visits

  9. Marine Energy Device Developers CETO Cyan Houston Jospa Key Engineering Services Ocean Energy Ltd.

  10. OpenHydro • Field trials Bay of Fundy • Progressing tidal device array off Brittany Ocean Energy • ¼ scale device to be tested with new turbine arrangement in Galway Bay in Spring (CORES) Wavebob • ¼ scale device to be tested with vent tank in Galway Bay in Summer

  11. Concept proving • proof of concept • early R&D work • often university based • some software simulation • preliminary economic study • Scale prototyping • temporary offshore installation • usually not grid connected • test of performance and survivability • economic study • Initial prototyping • lab based testing • some in-water proof of concept • software simulation • not capital intensive • Pre-Commercial • often permanently grid connected • project development still led by technology developer • high levels of finance • Full-Scale prototyping • sometimes grid connected • demonstrates installation & operation • financing essential • many fail to reach this stage • Commercial installation • major project for end client • most will be arrays Concept to Commercialisation
