  1. TECHNICAL DETAILS ON THE NKRL FILTERING PROCEDURES Gian Piero ZARRI and Peizheng WU Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique EUFORBIA Open Meeting, Leatherhead13/09/02

  2. General Strategy Recap of the overall filtering strategy : • the filtering rules are associated with Euforbia concepts corresponding, e.g., to ICRA categories; • the specific rules defining the user’s ‘profile’ are collected in the MyRules.txt file; • the ‘Euforbia label’ (NKRL annotation) associated with the required site is unified with the set of rules in MyRules.txt; • according to the ‘negative filtering’ strategy proper to Euforbia, if one of these rules ‘unifies’, the site must be refused.

  3. Examples of rules (1) Some simple rules Only one condition (IF cond1  deny access): RULE1:IF a given site/site section praises topicslikeracism, violence, sexuality etc. THEN the site/site section must be refused (e.g., the sub-section ‘lyrics.shtml’ of ‘www.snoop-dogg.com’ site that advocates sexuality, violence and drug legalisation).

  4. Examples of rules (2) Two conditions (IF cond1  cond2  deny access): RULE4: IF a given site/section is devoted to spreading information over Internet AND this information concerns sexuality, violence, racism etc. THEN the site/section must be refused (e.g., the site ‘www.textesgais.com’, devoted to the diffusion of short stories about homosexuality). Three conditions (IF cond1  cond2  cond3  deny): RULE8: IF a site does not contain explicit nudity AND this site includes sections AND some of these show photos of women/teenagers dressed in bras or underwears THEN site or section(s) (according to the strategy) must be denied (e.g., sections ‘mixed-sheer- bras’ and ‘mixed- teen-bras’ of ‘http://softcoregp.com/bracity/’
