  8. Program Schedule • Semester #1 • 20 units • Mon. & Tues. 7am to 3:30pm • theory courses • Wed., Thurs, & Fri. 6:30am to 3:30pm • clinical rotations at the hospital

  9. Program Schedule • Semester #2 • 18 units of nursing & 3 units of Bioethics • Tuesday- 7am to 2pm- theory • Thursday- 7am to 4pm- theory • Mon., Wed., Fri., Sat., Sun. • Clinical days (2 days each week)

  11. Prerequisites • Chemistry or Physics 3-4 units • Human Anatomy (with lab) 4 units • Human Physiology (with lab) 4 units • Microbiology (with lab) 4 units (all four science courses must have been taken within the last 5 years)

  17. Selection Process • Application suggestions: • Pg. 2 be sure to list all prerequisites you will be taking between your application submission and the beginning of the program (usually mid May)

  18. Selection Process • Pg. 3, ‘Personal Statement’: Be sure to answer all 4 questions 1. Why are you choosing a career in nursing now? 2. What experiences have you had in the health care field?

  20. Selection Process • Letters of Reference • Two letters needed on letterhead. • At least one academic reference from someone who can speak to your ability to succeed in an academically rigorous and fast paced program.

  21. Interviews • Applicants that complete the application process on-time and meet our minimum GPA will be contacted by the Nursing department to schedule an interview • Interviews will be conducted in December and May

  22. Background Screening Students must complete background checks prior to clinical placement, after reserving a space within the program

International Transcripts • If you attended college outside the United States, you will need to submit: • A comprehensive international transcript evaluation • An official, foreign transcript • The recommended evaluation service is Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute www.acei1.com 800-234-1597

Transcripts • We will need official transcripts from all the colleges that you have attended, including: • Community college/ University attended before your degree • University where you obtained your degree • Foreign transcripts from study-abroad program • Official Transcripts from all foreign study • Transcripts from Graduate or Professional degree • Transcripts from vocational program I.e. C.N.A, Massage, Phlebotomy, E.M.T • Community college/ University attended after degree • Transcripts for courses taken prior to application deadline

  28. Application Deadline • November 1, 2008 for Summer 2009 term • March 15, 2009 for Fall 2009 term • You may apply even if you are in the process of completing pre-requisites. However, all pre-requisites must be completed by the start date of the Accelerated BSN Program.

  30. Applying For Financial Aid • Apply for financial aid at the same time you are applying for admission. • Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

The Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

After being admitted into the program, you will receive a Financial Aid Offer from the Student Financing Office once we have received… • Beginning in Summer; • You must complete the 2008/2009 FAFSA for the Summer semester and an additional 2009/2010 FAFSA for the Fall/ Spring semesters. • Beginning in Fall; • You must complete the 2009/2010 FAFSA for the Fall/Spring semesters and an additional 2010/2011 FAFSA for the Summer semester.

  33. Annual Costs for 2008- 2009 Accelerated Nursing 1 year program Tuition & Fees: $47,442 Room and Board: $12,720 - $13,540

  34. Types of Financial Aid 1. Federal Stafford Loans: The total amount is $21,000 for the program. Repayment begins six months after graduation. • Federal Subsidized Loans: The federal government pays the interest while you are in college. • Federal Unsubsidized Loans: The borrower pays the interest six months after he/she has graduated. Summer total of 10,500. Subsidized; 5,500 Unsubsidized; 5,000 Fall/Spring total of 10,500 split evenly for both semesters. Subsidized; 5,500 Unsubsidized; 5,000

  35. Types of Financial Aid 2. Alternative/Private Loans: Supplemental educational financing Private loans are based on credit. The student has option to apply with a co-signer. Apply by phone or online. Repayment occurs six months after graduation.

Forgivable Loan Program: Kaiser Scholarship Northridge Hospital Scholarship Torrance Memorial Scholarship Students must first be accepted into the Accelerated BSN program in order to be eligible to apply for this scholarship. To be considered for either Scholarship an application needs to be filled out and then an interview will be set up. If you accept the scholarship and work for two years once you graduate, the loan or “scholarship” is forgiven. This means you do not have to pay it back.

ROY ADAPTATION MODEL • Developed by Sister Callista Roy CSJ, former chair of MSMC nursing department. • Used widely in the United States, Canada, Japan, and other countries. • The Roy adaptation model recognizes that a person is a bio-psycho-social-spiritual being in constant interaction with a dynamic and complex world.

  39. THREE NURSING PROGRAMS • DOHENY • Associate Degree in Nursing – 2 to 3 years • Evening or afternoon classes, clinicals on weekends • Pre-requisite: College Chemistry, English 1A, & General Psychology • GPA minimums: 2.5 overall and in the sciences • Starts in Fall and Spring of each year

  40. THREE NURSING PROGRAMS • CHALON • Traditional BSN Program- 3 to 4 years • Classes and Clinicals during daytime hours • 32 units of prerequisites • Overall GPA of 2.7 or greater • Science GPA of 2.5 • Starts Fall of each year

  41. THREE NURSING PROGRAMS • DOHENY • Accelerated BSN Program – 12 months • Must have Bachelors Degree • 46 units of prerequisite courses • Overall GPA of 3.0 or greater • Starts May and August of each year
