2. Part 1: Board Policy • Our school has a written Board of Education policy on sportsmanship, ethics and integrity in extracurricular activities. • Must include adoption date. • Must explain your program for participants, coaches, administrators, fans, cheerleaders, booster groups and parents.

3. • Must explain how you emphasize educational athletics within your program. • Must explain how the school enacts the policy. • Must explain how this policy is incorporated within the community.

Part 2: SEI Committee • Our school has a broad based Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity Committee. • Must be independent of other organizations and committees and meet solely to discuss Sportsmanship, Ethics and Integrity. • Must include administrators, coaches, athletes and student support group members. It is recommended that you also include alumni and community members.

8. • Must meet at least four times a year. (Preseason team/parent meetings required by the OHSAA or any other meetings discussing dual topics are not acceptable.) • Must have implemented an SEI programs.

9. Part 2: SEI Committee Examples • Show a copy of the list of committee members from the past year. • Show copies of committee meeting agendas and minutes from the past year. • Provide examples of programs initiated by the committee.

Additional Examples: • Sportsmanship t-shirts distributed at contests • Sportsmanship DVD developed and shown on video boards before contests, posted on web site, etc. • Ads developed for placements in souvenir programs • Posters developed and displayed at high traffic areas of indoor and outdoor facilities

Part 3: Presentations • Our school made presentations throughout the year on sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. • Must have been made to athletes, coaches, parents/ fans, spirit groups and the general student body. • Must show photos taken at the presentations along with or copies of written materials and handouts that were distributed.

Part 3: Presentations Examples • Provide schedules, agendas, dates, locations and descriptions of all presentations. • Present at all team preseason meetings. • Require attendance by students and faculty. • Include entire committee in planning presentations. • Provide handouts to those in attendance. • Evaluate the presentations for effectiveness.

13. Additional Examples: • Athletes present to middle and elementary school students • Officials speak to parent groups • Guest speakers address all students at assemblies • Address sportsmanship at all pep assemblies

14. Part 4: On-Going Campaign • Our school has an on-going campaign that promotes sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. • Must provide a description of all activities during the past year, highlighting the unique and/or most successful ideas. • Must show photos featuring student engagement (please do not overuse photos of post-game handshakes) along with copies of written materials, posters, souvenir program ads, signs and banners, etc.

Part 4: On-Going Campaign Examples • Signage posted in high traffic areas. • Signage welcoming the visiting team • Athletes read pregame sportsmanship messages • Student sections have student leaders who promote positive cheers • Student section includes a school administrator • Weekly sportsmanship awards presented to athletes, students

Part 5: Evaluation • Our school’s evaluation of coaches includes how they conduct themselves and promote sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. • Must include a copy of the evaluation form. • Must include any policies/guidelines you have for coaches in this area. • Must explain who performs the evaluations. • Must explain how you encourage your coaches to promote sportsmanship, ethics and integrity.

17. Part 5: Evaluation Examples • Cite how a coach or coaches demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, ethics and integrity • Cite how a situation was corrected with a coach or coaches who did not properly handle an unsporting situation

Part 6: Handling Complaints • Our school has a detailed procedure for receiving, investigating and acting upon complaints regarding sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. • . • Must include your written procedures and guidelines. • Must explain who is involved in handling, investigating and acting upon such complaints.

Part 7: Critical Situations • Our school has a written procedure for handling heated rivalries, overflow crowds and unruly spectators. • Must include a copy of all procedures. • Must explain who all is involved in implementing such a plan. • Must explain how you involve administrators and staff from the visiting school within your procedures.

Part 7: Critical Situations Examples • Cite how critical situations were handled (with both expected rivals and unexpected situations) • Cite how potential/anticipated critical situations were handled (plan was in place but no critical situation occurred) • Cite how unruly spectators were handled

Part 8: Awards Program • Our school has an awards program established to recognize outstanding sportsmanship, ethics and integrity. • Must include any conference or league sportsmanship awards, the criteria for selection and those involved in making the selections. • Must include any OHSAA sportsmanship awards, the criteria for selection and those involved in making the selections: State Awards; Archie Griffin Award; Courageous Student Award.

Additional Information • Please indicate if students in your school participated in any type of community service project(s) and provide details of the project(s). • In order to be considered for the Commissioner’s Award for Exceptional Sportsmanship, you must also include a 30-second video Public Service Announcement on sportsmanship on a DVD. Examples are posted on the OHSAA web site.
