  2. Indian Power Grid – its Evolution • Phenomenal expansion since Independence • Generation : 1349 MW 101,866 MW (in 1947) (in 2001) • Grid : Local grid – at the time of Independence. State Grids – emerged in 1960s. Regional Grids – in 1970s. Five Regional Grids – Northern, Western, Southern, Eastern & North-eastern National Grid – under progress.

Indian Power Scenario – at a Glance Existing • Installed capacity - 101,866 MWCoal – 71% Hydro – 25% Nuclear & others – 4% • Peak demand Peak power - 78,000 MW Energy (average) - 1395 MU/day • Availability Peak power - 68,000 MW Energy (average) - 1288 MU/day • Shortage Peak power - 10,000 MW (12.8%) Energy - 107 MU/day (7.7%)

NORTHERN REGIONAL POWER SYSTEMSalient features • Largest in geographical area amongst the five regions covering 30.7% of the area and 28% of the country’s population. • Maximum variation in weather conditions from severe cold to peak summer. • Large distances between generation centers and load centers and power is transmitted over long distances. • Availability of Hydro generation reduces drastically in winter months. • Largest number of constituents (8 states/UT’s, 3 Central Generating Companies, one Central Transmission Utility and Bhakra Beas Management Board).

NORTHERN REGIONAL POWER SYSTEMSalient features • Establishment of the first super thermal power station (Singrauli STPS) and 400 kV transmission system in the country. • Establishment of the first High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) long distance transmission system in the country (2x750 MW, + 500 kV Rihand-Dadri HVDC bipole). • First HVDC back-to-back interconnection with Western Region (2x250 MW back-to-back HVDC station at Vindhyachal). • First 400 kV Static Var Compensators (SVC’s) in the country (2x + 140 MVAR SVC at Kanpur). • Largest capacity of combined cycle gas power stations amongst the five regions (2480.47 MW) located along the 700 Kms. long Hazira-Bijaipur-Jagdishpur (HBJ) natural gas pipeline of GAIL.

  10. Grid Operation by POWERGRID • Earlier performed by personnel from Central Electricity Authority on the platform of REB • Transferred to POWERGRID in stages -SRLDC 1994 -ERLDC 1995 -WRLDC 1996 -NRLDC 1996 • Overall improvement in grid operation since takeover by POWERGRID

Overall Improvements by POWERGRID • Better hydro-thermal mix through objective & rational Scheduling. • Better merit order operation enhancing the overall efficiency. • Effective use of transmission lines and enhanced utilisation of their capabilities, retaining stability margins. • Better commercial practices. • Improvement in grid parameters (e.g. voltage, frequency profiles). • Better utilization of Inter-regional links. • Infused the grid discipline. • Lower backing down of Power plants.

WORLDWIDE DIVERSIFICATION IN TELECOM • World wide utilities like electric, gas, railways, water and roads have successfully diversified into telecom business • Electric - 63% , Gas - 18%, Railways - 12%, Water - 7% and Roads - 2% • Majority of these utilities are Transmission Utilities • Out of about major 50 utilities, 30 are Transmission Utilities in UK, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan , USA etc. • New entrants have been successful in penetrating long distance market
