  1. Metamorphic Rocks Unit 2, Section 1: Minerals, Rocks and Fossils

  2. Metamorphic Rocks • Metamorphic Rocks – Form when igneous, sedimentary or pre-existing metamorphic rocks are changed by heat and/or pressure • Does not melt completely (like an igneous rock) • Can be formed within the Earth and on the Earth’s surface

  3. Metamorphic Rocks • Is the only rock that forms directly from another rock • The features of the original rocks can be distorted or disappear • New minerals and crystals may form

  4. Foliated Non-Foliated • Foliated–the mineral grains are arranged in parallel layers or bands • The mineral grains form a pattern • May split apart easily • Non-Foliated – the mineral grains are arranged randomly • The mineral grains form a pattern • Does not split apart easily

  5. Is the metamorphic rock foliated or non-foliated? No Pattern = Not Foliated (Quartzite)

  6. Is the metamorphic rock below foliated or non-foliated? Has a Pattern = Foliated (Slate)

  7. Is the metamorphic rock below foliated or non-foliated? Has a Pattern = Foliated (Slate)

  8. Is the metamorphic rock below foliated or non-foliated? Has a Stripes = foliated (Gneiss)

  9. No Pattern = Non-Foliated (Marble)

  10. Metamorphic Rock Exit Answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper: • How does a metamorphic rock form? • What is foliation?
