  1. Ch.5 Matter – Properties and Changes of Matter • Physical Properties – any characteristic of the matter that can be observed without changing the identity of the material. You can’t change its chemical composition. • Common Characteristics – • Color • Shape • Smell • Taste • Mass • Volume • Density • Melting point • Boiling point • States of Matter

  2. Density – mass / volume • D = m/V or m/DV • Look at Applied Math Problems on pg. 135 • Do Practice Problems for website ips.msscience.com

  3. Physical Properties of Acid and Bases • pH scale measures the strength of hydrogen and hydroxide a substance has in it. • What is a Acid? • A substance contain H+ ions • Has a pH less than 7 • Usually has a sour taste • Found commonly in our fruits and vegetables • What is a Base? • A substance contain OH- ions • Has a pH greater than 7 • Usually is a slippery material • The taste is bitter

  4. Chemical Properties – characteristic of matter allows it to change to a different type of matter. One must look at the chemical structure of matter to see if it has chemically changed. • Common Characteristics • Oxidation (rusting) • Reactivity – how easily something reacts to another. • Combustion – it’s ability to burn • Toxicity – ability to chemical react to damage a living organism.

  5. Common chemical effects by acids and bases • Corrode metals (acids more than bases) • Harmful to animal and plant tissue • Form compounds to salts

  6. Physical Change – any change of matter where the identity of the matter stays the same. No chemical change has occurred. A change of color, size, shape, form or state of matter. • List five types of physical change you have seen today or yesterday. • Chemical change – occurs when one type of matter changes into a different type of matter with different properties. • List five types of chemical change you have seen today or yesterday.
