  1. SAN GABRIEL PRESBYTERY LIVING WATERS FOR THE WORLD PROJECT LAST YEAR OUR PRESBYTERY DECIDED TO JOIN LIVING WATERS FOR THE WORLD, LIVING WATERS FOR THE WORLD (LWW) IS THE GLOBAL MISSION RESOURCE OF THE SYNOD OF LIVING WATERS (PRESBYTERYAN CHURCH USA). THE MISSION OF LWW IS TO SERVE AS A RESOURCE TO CHURCHES OF ALL DENOMINATIONS, CIVIC ORGANIZATIONS AND OTHERS IN MISSION, ENABLING THEM TO SHARE CLEAN WATER WITH THEIR PARTNERS IN NEED.

  2. A GROUP OF 7 PEOPLE FORM OUR PRESBYTERY WERE TRAINNED LAST YEAR IN THE FOLLOWING FIELDS: • PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPMENT, PROJECT ADMINISTRATION AND SYSTEM SUSTAINABILITY EVALUATION AND ASSURANCE • HEALTH, HYGIENE AND SPIRITUAL EDUCATION • LWW CLEAN WATER SYSTEM INSTALLATION, OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

  3. After doing some research we decided to choose Peru as the country where our project will be established. we found out that lww is not yet well established in Peru, and, as in other countries in the area , the need for clean water is very important. last may we took a trip to peru to do more RESEARCH and visit COMMUNITIES HOPING TO FiND A community where our project will be based. thanks to the help of sara amstrong and rusty Edmonson who are pc usa missionaries in peru we had 7 locations where people expressed the desire to have a clean water purifying system.

  4. PERU AYACUCHO/HUANTA AREA

  5. we visited the following locations:the community of Azangarothe church cristo rey in huantathe church of maynay in huantathe church Emanuel in cuchipampathe community of huayllapatathe community of tranca AZANGARO CRISTO REY EMANUEL MAYNAY HUAYLLAPATA TRANCA

  6. AFTER DISCUSSING THE POSSIBLE CHOICES WE EXTENDED INVITATIONS TO BECOME OPERATING PARTNERS TO THE CHURCHES OF CRISTO REY AND MAYNAY LOCATED IN HUANTA. WE EXTENDED THESE INVITATIONS TO THESE CHURCHES BECAUSE OF THEIR SIZE AND BECAUSE BOTH ARE WELL ORGANIZED AND SEEM CAPABLE OF SUSTAIN THE SYSTEMS. WE HAVE RECEIVED ACCEPTANCE TO OUR INVITATIONS FROM BOTH CHURCHES AND WE ARE PLANNING TO TRAVEL TO HUANTA FROM NOVEMBER 11TH TO 17TH TO DISSCUS THE COVENANT THAT WILL BE SIGNED BEFORE WE START THE INSTALLATION.

  7. CRISTO REY CRISTO REY IS A CHURCH FUND BY PRESBYTERYAN MISSIONARIES IN THE 50’S. THE CAMPUS HOUSES A RADIO STATION THAT BROADCAST RELIGIOUS PROGRAMMING TO PERU, BOLIVIA, ECUADOR, CHILE AND COLOMBIA, SOME OF HIS PROGRAMS ARE IN QUETCHUA, THE LANGUAGE LARGELY USED IN THIS REGION. THIS CHURCH ALSO HELDS EVERY YEAR A SEMINAR PROGRAM BRINGING STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER PERU TO HUANTA FOR A WEEK, THE STUDENTS LIVE IN THE CAMPUS THE WHOL WEEK. THE LEADERS OF THE CHURCH EXPRESSED THAT WATER IS AN ISSUE WITH THE CHILDRENS IN THE AREA; ALTOUGH IS VERY COMMON THAT ADULTS ALSO GET SICK IN A REGULAR BASIS BECAUSE OF THE QUALITY OF THE WATER.

  8. THE TOWN OF HUANTA HAS A WATER TREATMENT PLANT BUT THE EQUIPMENT HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED IN 40 YEARS, THE ONLY TREAMENT THE USE IS CHLORINE TABLETS THROWN IN THE MAIN PIPELINE ONCE IN A WHILE.

  9. MAYNAY THE TOWN OF HUANTA ONCE WAS WITNESS TO ONE OF THE DARKEST PASSAGES IN THE HISTORY OF PERU, BETWEEN 1980 AND 1990, THE TERRORIST GROUP CALLED “SHINING PATH” USED THE CITY AS ONE OF ITS MAIN HEADQUARTERS. RECRUTING BY THE MEANS OF FORCE YOUNG ADULTS TO JOIN THE MOVEMENT AND TEARING FAMILIES APPART BECAUSE THIS WAS CONSIDERED A WAR ZONE. A LOT FAMILIES LOST EVEYTHING BECAUSE THEY HAD TO GO TO OTHER PLACES TO LIVE, AND THE ONES THAT STAYED LIVED IN CONSTANT TERROR FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS.

  10. TODAY THE SCENARIO HAS CHANGED, “SHINING PATH” IS NO LONGER A THREAT AND A LOT of FAMILIES ARE COMING BACK TO HUANTA, BACK TO THE PLACE THAT ONCE WAS HOME. SINCE THE NUMBER OF FAMILIES COMING BACK TO HUANTA IS QUITE LARGE THEY HAD TO ESTABLISH OUTSIDE OF HUANTA, IN MAYNAY, THIS COMMUNITY NOW HAS A CHURCH, A MEDICAL POST, A SCHOOL AND IT IS GROWING MORE EVERY DAY. WE RECEIVED A COPY OF AN ACT, WHERE LEADERS OF THE CHURCH AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS HAVE APPROVED TO WORK WITH US IN THE INSTALLATION OF A SYSTEM.

  11. IT IS OUR DESIRE TO INSTALL SYSTEMS IN BOTH COMMUNITIES NEXT YEAR, IN THIS COMING TRIP WE WIIL TALK TO BOTH CHURCHES AND EXPLAIN THEM THE REPONSABILITIES BOTH PARTS HAVE, US AS INITIATING PARTENERS AND THEM AS OPERATING PARTNERS. AMONG THE TOPICS WE NEED TO DISCUSS ARE THE FOLLOWING: • HELP THEM TO DEVELOP A BUSINESS PLAN TO SUSTAIN THE SYSTEM. • ORGANIZE GROUPS TO TEACH THE COMMUNITY ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEAN WATER, HYGIENE AND GROUPS TO TRAIN IN THE INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE OF THE SYSTEM. • DETERMINE THE LOCATION WHERE THE SYSTEM IS GOING TO BE HOUSED, ACCESS TO THE COMMUNITY, ACCESS TO THE WATER SOURCE, ETC. • COSTS, WHAT WILL THE PRESBYTERY OF SAN GABRIEL IS GOING TO PROVIDE AND WHAT ARE THEY GOING TO PROVIDE (PIPES, WATER PUMPS, TANKS, ETC). • DETERMINE THE DATES FOR OUR NEXT TRIPS.
